My Niece & Nephew were around yesterday and as I was a bit bored I decided to try some ideas using a lastolite reflector and my 580ex flash. Here are the results. I tried to fill the frame so what you see is almost what was taken. I thought it would be nice to fill the frame. The camera was set to programme mode and I used the 18-55 lens at 55mm.
If image 1 appears overexposed its me messing in psp 9. The original image was perfectly exposed.
Could I have some comments please. just to see If I am going in the right direction. I have had some good points raised in the past.

| Yes 1 is definitely overexposed and 5 is a bit too. # 3, with the closed mouth is my favourite. What beautiful babies. I love the up close and personal feel. Very sweet. Would love to see some baby sleeping shots... |

I take lots of child portraits - parents pay me, I'm glad to say. I am an "eye" person, though parents normally like smiles, teeth, etc.
The shots are very similar, and you have filled the frame with the faces. You might want to pull back a little.
But my golden rule is to avoid the child sitting directly in front of the lens. Turn the posing stool 30-45 degrees right or left, and get the child to turn his/her head to the camera. This gives a greater sense of "movement" in the shot.
For older children, you can ask them to tilt their head a little too.
