I like the candid nature of this photo.. I'd dress like that if I could pull it off! The funny thing is about partial desat, at least IMHO is it should only be used when it has a purpose (i.e. someone's eyes, or a special top that a lady likes, or anything that requires, or you want the viewers eyes to be drawn too). With that said I think this photo is almost ruined by the red hat. My eyes are immediately drawn to it. His face is almost lost in foreground. Keep up the good work.

First of all I like the shot - it's a nice candid.

BUT...

It's yet another selective desaturation shot. This technique has been HUGELY overused recently on this site and 99.9% of the times it adds nothing at all to the picture. In the case of this image it draws our attention to the hat. Why? Is the picture about the hat or the man? Or is this a promotional shot for Red Hat Linux? Please please please, if you're going to do selective desat then do it for a reason.

In the mean time I am routinely and arbitrarily knocking 1 or 2 marks off every image I see that uses selective desat without a good reason.

I love the shot but I hate what you have done with it.

if you like doing selective desat, go for it! not everyone is against it. I just started playing with PS so I love doing that kind of stuff.

I am not against selective desaturaion either and I am not 'playing' with Photoshop anymore. It's about 'why'.

Just to clarify - I'm not against all selective desat. I'm against pointless selective desat. And I've seen very few occasions here where selective desat served any purpose.

you can't do something just because you want to or like it?

You can, of course. But is this thread really about that?

I know she wanted feedback about her picture. I just thought that it was kind of harsh about the selective desaturation. thats all, sorry.

You don't have to be sorry. It's about personal tastes. Some people would like it and some would not. The reason why we are posting is because we want to tell the person how we feel about it. That's all.

no I understand that completely. I guess I would have goen with a "ya know, I like the picture but i'm just not feeling the selective desat."

everyone is entitled to their opinion and yes i have just started to muck around with PS. I am only learning and sorry but i thought that this shot might of been ok as a desat. I do understand it has been used alot here but i did it because i like the look of it. Who knows, in a few months i might hate it and love something else. But for now i like it. Like i said everyone is entitled to their own opinions and thank you for yours.

I did also say that I liked the picture. Personally I think I would have gone duotone for the whole thing but it's still a good candid.

My comments against selective desat were aimed more generally at the rest of the site than at lentil in particular. This is a subject that has been bugging me recently so I took the opportunity to express my opinion on the subject.
