Rest assured all! Jon is a good-humoured, upstanding family guy! He's probably just being mischevious!

Yes, if that was Jon in the photo, I don't think he'd have been able to post this. ;) Of course, his camera is 8 hours in the future, isn't it?

I can't get my head around how this could possibly be taken legally.

By that I am not in any way doubting that the editing is legal (I am sure it is in fact due to the photographer involved), I am showing my total lack of knowledge and ability as there is no way I can even understand how to achieve this great a shot without working the hell out of it in PS.

Can anyone else out there even hazard a guess as to how to do something like this?

I really hope you tell us how this one was done, as it is absolutely sensational!

My guess was (until I read 15 sec. exposure):

1). bulb exposure
2). capture face
3). darken room
4). paint smoke with coloured lights, indivdually
5). increase saturation in PS and other editting

He couldn't possibly do all that with only 15 secs. to work with though, I don't think.

How about image displayed on projection TV behind him? A trick being used more and more. Makes it quite easy actually.

Leave it to me to read something complicated into it.

i could see that, especially as most of the color/light is silhouetting him--but the only thing that makes me wonder is--what is causing the green on this side of his face? maybe a little painting with light? i dunno. neat though. :)

Well I'm just guessing. It could be more complicated!

Blimey - that was a long way down!
; )

Sorry for the silence - sudden rush of business intererred with wittling away the hours at DPC.

The shot was relatively simple, apart from not being able to stay still. I focused on myself with light on, then switched to manual. Then I lay down in the same position, pressed release with remote cable while wafting a colour-changing LED torch to and fro, in and out of my mouth.

Very little post-processing other than a little dodge + burn, some levels adjustment and very slight noise reduction.

Would have been a lot more fun having it in the challenge though - I like that update button sometimes. But right now all I have a sea of red text telling me I'm a cheat!

Jon -- No one, least of all the SC is calling you a cheat! The datestamp rule is one of the few easy to understand, totally objective rules we have, and it has generally been very successful. Its a hard lesson to learn, but everyone should be ensuring their camera is recording the date and time correctly before shooting lest they get that one perfect shot for the weekly challenge! Congratulations on a beautifully done photograph!

They do a colour-changing torch too?! I have a big lightbulb shaped colour-changer (used in this series) but a torch sounds even funkier.

Glad to see the landing didn't hurt too much : )
