Hmmmm, maybe not. If I was in a position to direct Nikon I think that I would favour releasing fewer, better cameras in line with comsumer expectation. Thus leaving the quick to market side to the digicam sector of the company.
I personally prefer the idea of buying a camera that will be 'current' for longer. I don't buy into the cutting edge movement, if a new camera has something that will be very productive and useful for me then I'm interested, but one or two slight increases in technology is not usually enough. |
So Nikon's 'new' D2Hs 4Mp is more up your alley?
Digital cameras have entered the 'computer type' phase of the last 20 years - doubleing of horsepower and halving of price every 18 months. If you have a product that is over that age, then it is out of date. useful lifespan is longer, but for PCs about 3 years is it 9the begin to fail electrically then if nothing else). Hopefully digicams of all type last longer than that! The consumer grade cams are 'replaced' annually pretty much, still more often than dSLRs.

HAHA
The D2Hs is a speed camera, built for sports journalists.
It does not require xxx amount of megapixels.
Not a good comparison, that like saying a pentium 3 ghz processor is better than an AMD 64 bit 2 ghz processor. Its not just the number on the camera that makes it good..YEEEESH.

The kit in Canada then should retail for about $1230-1250 CAD based on the American suggested retail price.

I assume the price won't drop until the 350XT is available next month. My info came from HERE. |

Its easy for folks to get catch 'upgrade syndrome'. You really have to ask yourself why you need to upgrade. Most of us do at some time and I was no exception when moving up from my Fuji s602z. It was one of the best moves I made. I'm more than happy with my 300D. It does what I want and I dont see me changing it just because a new shiney model has arrived on the block.
So, lets all take a deep breath.....breath out....and relax...
Dont be seduced by the new model, be faithful to your old friend......mind you look at that body...........noooooooooonoooooooo.........
Phew that was close..

When I look at the specs of the 350D and compare to my 18-month-old 10D, it's clear that features and capabilities are migrating downwards at a rapid pace. The fact that I could now buy, in some ways, more camera for 60% of the price, is, however, in no way painful. I see it as a guarantee that when I feel I need to upgrade, I will be able to do so and gain significant performance without breaking the bank. I can't wait to see what the next year or two brings to this marketplace.
the DSLR market is expected to double in 2005 compared to 2004, and 2004 was a banner year. In electronics, more volume attracts more investment, and brings more choices at lower cost to the consumer.

I got my 300D Jan 5. Yeah, I;d like the features of the 350XT, but even had i known then it was coming, the price and features, i might not have been able to wait. Hell, once the wife gave teh OK, i had a hard time waiting a week!
If trends continue, then I might be able to plan on getting a 30D (20D repelacement) in 18 months. A reason to start saving now!
However, were i to ave been buying in March, the 350XT hands down over the 300D.

What pains me is that Canon will not make a spot meter available on any of its DSLRs, unless I'm willing to pay almost CDN $ 6.000 for it.

The Canon 1D Mark II is a speed camera also. It cost a few hundred more the the D2Hs but it is faster and double the resolution.

Just got my 300D, knew there was a new Canon in the pipeline, but I couldn't wait any longer!
Gonna use this one for a year, then might think about an upgrade and keep the 300D as a second body!
I'm not really worried at the moment, I like the feeling of the 300D with grip. Who knows, may even just go all out and get a 1Ds Mkll...I wish!

I will be ready to buy in the beginning of March. I am assuming that I should go to the 350. Any thoughts? Should I take the 300D at the cheaper price or go to the 350?

Bah. I wouldn't trade my 10D for it. For a 20D, yes. I like the metal construction and the unrestrictive custom functions and shooting modes. 8mp vs 6mp isn't really, in Phil Askey's views anyways, reason to trade up. For the features that I want in a camera (full frame, weatherproofing, 1-series focusing) I'm not thinking about upgrading until I can afford a 1Ds Mk II. The 10D was an awesome camera when it was first introduced and remains so.
