I'm new to DPC and really enjoy the site. I've learned a ton in only a few weeks. Having bought my D70 only a month back after three quick upgrades, I've been closing the gaps quickly with all your help.
To whoever out there is listening PLEASE comment on the photo's in the bridge challenge. I'm dying for input, so I hope people here give that little extra for what it's worth.
Question: What's a decent, cheap starter macro lens cost? I've really been digging some of the close work of the site members here and have been inspired. Any help would be cool.
Cheers,
Steve |

Steve,
When you say "cheap", how much $$$?
A true Macro lens with a 1:1 ratio can run from $360 - $1400. I personally have the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro and I am very happy with it. I paid $450 for it. I like the Tamron for the build quality, warranty and it comes with the lens hood and a soft carry case.
Most other Canon owners prefer the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens, it is a grat lens, but only 1 year warranty and doesn't come with a lens hood and it is a must for that lens
Sigma also makes a few Macro lenses that are very popular. You might want to check those out if your budget is limited. They are the least expensive of the bunch.
Not sure what macro lenses Nikon makes. |

Sigma 105mm macro???
By cheap, I mean cheapest. Entry level stuff but I usually never go that route in terms of price. I've been hemoraging money on camera equipment over the last few weeks and my imagination is getting the better of my wallet. I'm hoping to skate away with a deal somewhere...maybe on ebay but even there things bid up to their street level.
There are some crazy cool macro photo's here on the site that are driving my insane with jealousy. My bank card is starting to smoke.
...look-out, here I come! |

I've only heard good things about this lens (I think Jacko has one). imho you should not go for cheap when it comes to glass, best to save up and let your card recover from the D70 ;) I just got the canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, not just a macro lens.

Here is a Sigma 50mm Macro for $249. It gives you the 1:1 ratio.
Sigma 50mm Macro
This is the least expensive Macro that I know of.
I know what you mean about your bank card smoking, I just hope my wife doesn't smell the smoke...:-) |

If you want the least expensive way to achieve macro without gaining distortion or losing AF, AE or metering functions I would sugest you start with an extension tube. The run any where in price from $60 to about $100.

Oh, she will. It's just a matter of time.
In terms of spending, I saw a few nice shots here with the Sigma so that might suffice and once I get my teeth into an idea, I can't live with myself unless I follow through. It's a bad and very expensive trait.
I also play guitar and like to record music...another VERY expensive hobby.
Will it ever end??? |
