| I know that it is suggested that you leave comments on anything you voted below a three, but that just makes everyone click on 4 if they didn't love your photo. I was hoping after submitting a photograph, that I'd receive some good feedback as to help me improve, but it looks like everyone is just clicking 4. I'd post my photo, but its in a current voting challenge, and it doesn't matter which one is mine anyway. That isn't my issue. I think anything below a 5 should have to have some comment, or suggestion. That is just my 2 cents, and I'm a newbie here anyway. |

since you are a newbie i'll give you the bad news... :)
just get used to this... learn by your self by looking other peoples ribbons in any challenge and try to recreate some of them, see the composition, the technique, eveything you can imagine and think why that photo deserved the ribbon.. that will be a good start on it... just my opinion hope it helps.

It won't be that at all. If people are voting a 4 it is because that is what they think your photo deserves, no way it is a case of them upping their score to avoid leaving a comment as:
a) The vast majority of people are going to ignore a suggestion like "you should leave a comment on 3 and below scores" anyway and just give it whatever score they want.
b) Most people are unlikely to read the relevant thread about it. I read the forums here a lot, and even then I maybe only hit 25% of the threads.
So, don't sell yourself short and assume you should be getting a lower scrore, as it just isn't the case.

mike just try that out what i've told you not only will you be happy with the photos you take, and you'll be happy with your score... at the begging i took this like a challenge and even got sad with my score now i just take it as some fun and just nowing if i'm better or not. just have fun with it don't take it personal. :)

| Believe me, I'm not taking it personal at all. I guess my expectations of helpful hints and suggestions was higher that reality. Plus its my first challenge and I'm excited to get feedback, good or bad. I'm not offended with the score by any means. I'm still overjoyed that I found this site. And, it is a hell of a lot of fun. |

I'd have to disagree. If all you are after is a ribbon then maybe you can get one by recreateing something that was done here and trying to do it better. If discraft was suggesting learnig technique in this manner then perhaps it is a good idea. Otherwise stick to what you are doing and try to improve youir own technique. Develop your own style and most important don't let what happens here on DPC get you down. I've seen images here on DPC that have scored 4s and 5s that could hang in museums.

I love your Benjamin Franklin quote. He is my favorite of our nation's forefathers. And thanks for the insight to the website.

Totally agree. I am not here to win ribbons. Here to improve on what I love doing.

but in my second thread i say to just try to learn with other ribbon winners... i do not go only for the ribbon, i don't go for it if i win i win. but i was just saying to try and learn from others that way... i did not learn many things throught comments, since they are always saying very nice, i like this, then you receive one that really helps so... my opinion is to go out and try what other people have done not saying to photography the same thing but try to shooting like a building with diferent angles and so on.

| I'm fairley new here too, I've found that I don't get that many comments either. And most of the time when I do they are not very helpfull, I am a new Photographer, and I'd think that with the high number of great photographers on this site, that the comments might be a little better. |

Well the amount of crap any comment is capable of generating greatly reduces the amount of positive critisism any person judging these is likley to leave.

Comments and voting is really strange thing.
On of my entries I like a lot was in the "faceless" challenge but it just got on average 4.8 but the comments were:
- I like the angle
- Nice collection of shapes and angles here.
- Great idea if it was a kid model would be more in character
- This is great. I love it.
- oh no, I thought it was only me who had this idea??? Good job!
And the commenters gave me on average 6.6
I marked them all helpful just because they were nice and encouraging but I would have liked some comments from those 25 who gave me 1, 2 and 3 but I think they didn't comment at all.
And this here is that entry:

I'm doing my first challenge and from about 150 views and 120 votes I've had three comments all which were dead on and helpful.
I'm crusing at a 5.3 which I assume isn't too, too bad for a shot I'm not entirely thrilled with. |

I have found that if I PM a photographer they are more than willing to help. Not everybody has all day to sit in front of a computer and comment. If you PM someone and say:
"I had a look at your portfolio and noticed you are an experienced photographer. If you get a chance would you please have a look at some of my photos in my portfolio and comment on how I can improve"
Most of the time they will come in and comment on a few photos and help you out. Don't get mad if they sound mean, you asked for the comment on how to improve.
Am I right here nsbca7?

I second that. If you want feedback from me, PM me and ask for it. I rarely will ignore such a request. I seldom comment on challenge netries that I don't score well because I get too much "hate mail" back when I make honest comments on mediocre images. If you seek me out, I will assume you are ready for whatever I have to say.
Robt.
