I took some shots yesterday for the separation challenge. I shot these in raw format for the first time. When I returned to the house I discovered that I was unable to open the files with any of my standard software including photoshop 7. I was however able to open it with the software that came with the camera. Some crappy minolta file transfer software. Using the one program that would open the file didn't help any however, due to the fact it would not let me save as a Jpg. Does anyone have any tips or advice that could help me...

Thanks in advance tristalisk

Only Photoshop CS and Paint Shop Pro 9 have basic RAW support. Otherwise you'll need to use your other software that came with the camera. Standard programs can't read the files!

Think there must be the possibility to convert to jpeg in your "crappy" software. If not you need another program. I use Capture 1 or PS CS.

What format does it let you save as? .tiff? Just save it as something, then open it up in PS and covert to .jpg

I think you have to make sure you change the file to 8 bit before it will save as jpg.

the only format the minolta software will let me save in is whatever format I opened it in. raw to raw, jpg. to jpg. It just a file trasnfer program.

Your DiMage 7 came with a program called Minolta Image Viewer Utility when new. It will open RAW files and allow you to save them in JPG or TIFF.

That model has been out for about four years (it was reviewed on DPReview in July of `01). If you haven't already done so I'd reccommend that you scour the Minolta website for updates to firmware and software.

I used Minolta's supplied software when I had a DiMage A1, and I wouldn't call it crappy. Actually I thought it was very full-featured for supplied software. Like any image processing program, it takes a little getting used to.

IrfanView (www.irfanview.com) is a free image-viewing utility (one of the fastest thumbnail generators around, great for browsing large folders) which can view RAW and save as tiff.
