I don't really see this being used for portraits often, unless it would be group shots.. It may be very useful though, when trying to get wide to normal persective in low light conditions. It is still a mild wide angle.

Canon already has a 35/1.4

I imagine there would have to be a large discrepancy in prices between the two.

Wow ! This rocks. I love my 50mm F1.4 indoors, handheld. A 30mm would be even better because I find the 50mm not wide enough more often than not.

On a 1.6 crop cam this will be very close to the FoV of a 50mm (about 47mm, to be exact). That does make it a really good choice for portrait work, if it's really sharp and contrasty.
I've resisted buying any lenses specifically designed for the cropped sensors, but depending on the price and performance on this one I may make an exception. I would absolutely love a sharp, uber-fast 30mm!

I am interested in seeing some samples from this lens as well once they come out. I would very much like to have a good walkaround lens that is close to a 50mm equivalent without emptying my bank account.

Edit: I very much hope it has a nicely-designed diaphragm, not some six-straight-blades abomination!

The FoV changes to almost what would be called a normal lens (normal being about 55mm) but the DoF and CoC, two of the most important factors in produceing a complimentary portrait, are the same as any 30mm, crop factor or not. By definition a portrait lens is a lens of between the focal length of 70mm and 135mm with the 85mm or the 105mm being the most prefered.

Heh, missed that... seems promising, hope they're curved.

I saw this review yesterday. I've been thinking about getting a lens in this category, as I find the 50mm 1.8 to close for most events (read parties) in which I would like to use this type of fast lens.

I've been looking at the Sigma 28mm 1.8 EX and Canon also has an EF 28mm 1.8. Does anybody have any experience with either of these lenses?

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM

Lens Construction 11 elements in 9 groups
Focus Adjustment Rear focusing system with USM
Closest Focusing Distance 0.3m / 1 ft.
Filter Size 72mm

Sigma 30 mm F1.4 EX DC HSM

Lens Construction 7 Elements in 7 Groups
Minimum Focus Distance 40 cm (15.7 in)
Filter Size 62 mm

But sometimes you just get what you pay for. What the difference would be on the final product under normal circumstances needs to be seen and may even be negated.
