I recently purchased a d70 body only for around $750 and have not yet purchased a good wide lens and am looking to purchase one for under $500. I currently have 3 choices I am considering: The Tokina 12-24 which I haven't seen any lower than $500, the Sigma 18-50mm EX DC f 2.8 which I have found for about $420, or the Nikkor 18-70mm d70 kit lens which I can get for about $275. I currently have a 50mm f1.8D Nikkor, which works fine for most of my shooting, but I want to go as wide as possible while maintaining the best quality optics.

The difference between 12mm and 18mm is not a huge concern to me, so I guess I just have a couple of questions. Is there any reason, other than the 24-70 range to not go with the Tokina? Also, is there any major differences between the sigma and the nikkor other than the one stop aperture difference? And is that one stop worth $145?

Any suggestions on what you would do if you were me and why? I do a broad range of shooting from portraiture to macro to architecture.

Any thoughts are appreciated, as well as suggestions of other options I may want to consider. Thanks.

Sigma has a very nice 12-24. I couldn't imagine the difference between 12 and 18 until I borrowed my buddies. Very nice lense and I will have one soon. They are around $550 at KEH.COM or so I am told. I really enjoy the 18-70 that came with my D70 but can't wait to get the Sigma....

save up for the Nikkor 12-24 or get the Sigma 12-24. None of the other options come close as far as I can tell. I ended up getting the Nikkor for the constant F4, but I understand the Sigma is equally sharp though just a tad slower at the long end.

oh geez i want that 10-20 mm. the nikon kit lens isnt half bad for what ya pay, the optics are pretty good i dont know much about the tokina. i have the 10.5 mm and if u want super wide that is great but it is a fisheye so dont plan on taking realistic pictures with it. (which is entirely its appeal to me)

Slightly above your budget but worth considering is the Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 for $569.99. I bought this lens just before my trip to Arizona and have been very happy with it so far. One drawback of this lens is that it uses 82mm filters, which are not cheap. A polarizer, for example, is $49.35.

I have been doing some research and many people on the nikonians third party lens forum say there is practically no difference between the nikkor 12-24 and the tokina 12-24. I have heard of a couple of people returning their nikkors because the tokina is just as good and half the price.

It's the Sigma 10-20 for me :)

I did have an idea to stick to Nikkor lenses but that 10-20 is a must!
