I am hesitant to go with apple, for many reasons. There are compatibility issues, overall higher price for some of the same specs and many others.

Compuke is the botton of the barrel IMO. We have them at work. When we first got them, all of the laptops would spontaneously reboot every 20-30 minutes, causing a LOT of lost work, not to mention a near riot among the users.

Over a period of 18 months, my own laptop has had to have 2 new Hard Drives, a new motherboard, a new display and a new CD drive.

Sounds like you're getting better at breaking things, Spazzy. Next time it blows up, tell the boss you want a raise. ;0)

Obviously you have not had anything other. Dell is about as low as you can go, besides Gateway, when it comes to bang for your buck.

Unfortunately, my experience with Compuke is not unique, and I haven't tested one yet, but it is tempting. The desktops seem to fare a bit better, but not much.

You are assuming way to much.

I have dealt with a very cost effective local PC manufacturer, I have had a Compaq Laptop and one other 'no-brand' laptop. When I was tasked with researching the best overall deal for laptops and long-term hardware support, Dell came up as the best purchasing decision for our corporation.

In the three years since these laptops were purchased, the only problem we have experienced is the death of one fan on one laptop CPU Fan. This was replaced within a few business days.

For the most part, those laptops stay plugged in an on at all times, being shutdown, perhaps once a week. One of the laptops is taken out of office on business trips several times a month and is the worse for wear, but still operating fine and the others are taken on trips from time to time.

My personal laptop is also a Dell and I have 'beaten' it in comparison to office laptop that is regularly taken on business trips and so far, I have had no problems with it. It is also reaching two years of age itself.

The only other laptops that I might recomend would be IBM. Of course, when I worked in a much larger corporation that had hundreds upon hundreds of IBM laptops, I noticed that one of the Tier 2 hardware support guys was constantly rebuilding those machines due to them continually breaking down. From hard drive failure, to Mainboard failure to any other failure you can think of, most of which ended up being user created.

Does that make IBM laptops the worst? I don't think so.

It has been my experience that Dell produces reliable laptops and they also have excellent repair services.

I like my dell, the inspiron 8600, got it for $1200 with an extra battery, gets about 8 hours of life when fully charged. Battery life is VERY important on the road.

I did have a bad experience with a compaq laptop, and I'm not the only one. They are cheaply made and I had problems from day 1. Remember this, you get what you pay for.

If you dont like Mac, which I understand, Look into Dell. As someone mentioned before, go to the library and read back issues of PC Magazines... :o)

Wow thanks guys. That Gateway looks to be just what I was looking for. Thank you everyone for your help. I am going to go see if I can try it out sometime soon.

As a road warrior, I can tell you that the consensus among people who travel for a living is that you either get an IBM (T series preferrably, tho they make a desktop replacement that is great for gamers) or an Apple powerbook. Anything else is going to be trouble. Go to an airport. Watch the frequent flyer lines. Look at what they're carrying (they have to pull them out for screening). 9 of 10 will either be IBM or Apple. Seriously. If you're a gamer, go IBM, if you're a photographer, go apple.

If you are buying a laptop to support creative desires, such as photography, take a serious look at mac. I know I'll take heat for this, but the PC people like to quote stats and compatibility issues while the mac people pound out creative work. I can get ThinkPads cheap through employee discount and PC desktop machines for almost nothing, yet I bought a powerbook at regular price for my personal use.

I need some opinions. I am looking to get a desktop replacement/light gaming notebook pretty soon. I am hoping to get an athlon based system. Some of the computers i have been looking into are models from. www.cyberpowersystems.com and www.ibuypower.com. I have also looked at a few hp's and an acer. My budget is about 1400-1600 dollars. I am a little worried about both cyberpower and ibuypower because there seems to be a lot of disastified customers on www.resellerratings.com

Ia m very excited about the compaw r3000z but the best graphic card available is geforce 440 64 meg. I was hoping to have at least a 128 meg.

I bought mine at Cyberpower, and my friend did his, no problems so far !
When buying laptop make sure you get separate video card with it's on ddr ram,not the shared one ,if you plan on using Adobe PS and working on photos.

I love my Toshiba...It's about 3 years old but still holds its own, spec-wise...

At first I bought a Compaq, then returned it because it was puking all over the place as soon as I got it home.

Several people have also given advice about this computer. I don't like Macs. They are overpirced for what you get. The new rumored G5 notebook sounds cool, bu that is a ways off and will be very expensive.

But Apple Laptops are not without fault either...

Battery Exchange, iBook Logic Board replacement (Mobo) and
15-Inch Power Book G4 Displays

Six in one and a half dozen in the other.

My neighbourette asked me for some purchasing advice regarding a new computer. After some back and forth about her needs and preferences, I suggested a Mac. She went out and bought a PC, because it appeared to her a better deal.

Two weeks later she decided to upgrade her computer. The upgrade didn't go as smoothly as expected and took two days and a few hundred dollars to complete. By now, her total expense exceeded the price of the Mac I had suggested.

A month or so down the road she asked me, if I knew a store who would take her PC in trade for a Mac. Apparently, she had been repeatedly confronted with a blue screen and was unable to work. The technician was paying her regular visits, and she was paying him just as regularly, naturally.

I told her it would be easy to trade in a Mac, but a PC for a Mac? I offered her my sledgehammer to release her from her pain. I understand some unsuspecting relative ended up with her original computer. She went out and bought a Pentium.

We're still talking. She's on her forth or fifth PC. A different technician comes to her house now, and she hates computers, technicians, email and browses her numerous phones. We're talking about her garden now, through the seasons. I compliment her about her dress or her shoes, and she gives me home-made jam at the end of every summer.

Occasionally she visits me and asks to print something, to burn a CD or just to watch a DVD on my Mac.

What you don't seem to understand is that have expierience with Macs. The OS is good. I just think they are overpriced for what you get in terms of specs, plus the screen is not that good on their notebooks. Anyways i am hoping to run a dual boot XpHome/Linux. From what i ahve heard the G5 notebook is rumored in about 6 months. It will also include a much better screen (current one is not so great). I cannot confirm these rumors, it's just what i have heard.

I just purchase a 12" Powerbook with a superdrive about 2 weeks ago and I love it. For digital photography I say MAC is the best way to go. I run and store my photos in IPHOTO which is a very good program and I do all the color correction in photoshop. MY powerbook is awesome no problems so far. Trust me you will love it. If you like to play games even though I played a game on my new powerbook it played just fine but pc's have more games available. But also if you are going to get a laptop for games you will have to update it soon anyway since these pc games keep asking for so much hardrive space and videocard updrages. So you should just leave your desktop pc for games and get a mac laptop.

Get a MAC
