I actually had another person ask me this question (somewhere other than DPC) and don't really know how to answer. Can anyone help?

"Hi to you techies out there. I am wondering about the different ways to store and send digital pictures. Can you explain the difference between these? I love playing with digital pix on the computer and so far, always store them as JPEG. Should I be using one of these other methods instead? Thanks in advance for your advice!"

Bitmap File
GIF Bitmap File
JPEG Bitmap File
FlashPix Bitmap file
PCX Bitmap file
PNG Bitmap file
TIFF File
Tiff Compressed
Text Only

well i guess that all really depends on the end result they want from the digital picture.

jpg is a lossy format, but is good for resizing to email around and web display. Same with gif

most of the other formats are not compressable so the image size is rather large.

have them stick with jpg (jpeg) format since they are just "playing"

Thanks. The main erason I asked is because the manual for my last camera (FujiFilm S5000) said I should save my pictures as a TIFF file instead of the Jpeg. The weird thing is that my camera saves as Jpeg but not TIFF.
