drz01 think like this basic editing- Editing has to be done in the hole image basicly is that but there are some little things you can't do especially in filters, besides that i guess its all to it.
Advanced editing, you are almost free to do almost everything, but just keep on asking when you are not really sure, so you don't get DQ'ed this is just a hint.

Just wondering, but what about shadow/highlight adjustments? It's not really spot editing, but sort of modifying only certain parts of a photo. |

IMO and I could be wrong I think that fall under:
Spot-Editing: Absolutely no spot-editing is allowed. This includes, but is not limited to drawing tools, dodging/burning tools, and cloning tools. Additionally, the use of any type of selection tool is prohibited except to select a non-feathered, non-anti-aliased rectangular area for cropping.
I would err on the side of caution with that or contact a member of the site council to get it validated.

Pretty much anything which affects only the tonal or color values of the pixels is OK, so long as you haven't made any selections to limit the part of the photo to which the adjustments are made. This should include just about anything under the "Adjustments" menu, such as Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, mode change to mono-/duo-/tri-tone, Channel Mixer, etc. You can even put these on Adjustment Layers if you have them available.
What's not allowed is anything which moves pixels or changes the shape of objects, such as filters (except those specifically allowed in the rules), painting, cloning, smudging, etc., or the use of any type of selection tool (lasso, marquee, magic wand).

If Telehubbie is referring to the shadow/highlight adjustment that selects obverse areas and applies adjustments to them, that's quite not allowed. Oddly, the same effect can be had, in curves, without selection, but it takes a lot more skill to sdo it right. So the simplest, anyone-can-do-it technique for dealing with contrast issues is not allowed, while the arcane art of tweak-n-push-with-graphs is completely legal.
Ditto with color adjustment, which can be done at a very sophisticated level in basic editing, almost miraculous what you can do with selective color and channel mixer, both of which are completely legal. But the same, or nearly the same, results can be much more easily had by using the selction tool and working on several specific areas (sky, foreground, subject, for example).
I like the challenge of it, but for me it is much harder to realize the visualized result in basic editing than in advanced editing, so sometimes I end up spending MORE time shopping the basic entries than I do the advanced ones. Depends on how complex the picture is. I'm talking about stuff like color/contrast fine-tuning, not special effects filters and so forth. It is many ways the most challenging thing in digital photography, to try to tweak a basically straight image to its highest expressive level. Purity of color and of tone.
Robt.
