cheers

if all the helper does is push the shutter i think it's ok, but you have to choose all the camera settings, and focus your self...

This is where personal ethics come in. Nobody is ever going to be able to *PROVE* that you didn't set up the camera and take the picture yourself, are they? I'd say that someone behind the camera after you've done the setup and stuff is fine. Timers and things are available on most cameras in order to set up longer shots if you *are* alone.
Using a prop to focus and stuff is always helpful as well.
For mine, I just used a shutter release cable (my camera is one of the few digitals that has a thread for one, and a 2 sec timer. Wasn't all that hard. |

I would personally say that if you set everything up and have someone else take the photo that's okay.
Many "professional" photographers have their assistants take that actual photograph, so yeah. I think it's okay as long as all they're doing is taking the picture and everything aesthetically is you. |

well by pressing the shutter you mostly focus at the same time, and i do need some one to press the shutter for my idea, but it will be my idea and my seting of the camera
and yeah i know that no one would be able to prove a cheating photo.. but personally i would feel bad if i cheated
Since the challenge happens for the 3rd time i thought that there were a set of rules.. but i guess not?

In the Challenge Rules/Advance Editing under Image Submission Format: "You may let someone else press the shutter if you are unable to, but you must be the one who set up the shot and configured the camera. If you wish to collaborate with others when creating your submission, you will need express permission from the administrators beforehand." |

For a self portrait I'd say that you have to do it yourself... But with a bit of messing around you can get some pretty good shots even with just a self timer...
I did my 'light' shot with just the timer...
And some of the outtakes were truely hillarious... Especially one where I tripped over the sync cord for one of the flashes, and the shot shows me trying to hold it up... :-)
Damn, should have kept the light one for this challenge... Hmmmm. Reshoot! :-).
Cheers, Chris H.

If you have a video out ability, you can connect up to a tv and use it to compose the shot.

I dont think that's possible with DSLRs. I used to do that with my Minolta DiMage 7i but it's not possible with the Digital Rebel. Not as far as I know anyway.

It is sorta, you get the review, so you just shoot more images... That's what I've just done for my entry, ran a long video cable to a TV I could see while I mucked around, and used the remote cable... (Got that since the light challenge, much easier than the timer/run/trip method! :-) )
The photo dosn't look anything like I thought it might, but hey, I don't have a perfect record to keep up. :-).
Cheers, Me.

I used the timer on my camera, banged my knee really bad running from behind the camera to position myself. |

Could have used that for the pain challenge. |

In fact, can anyone prove that the person in the picture is even the photographer?
In some cases based on previous entries and the more well known site members then yes, otherwise again it's a matter of trust and personal ethics.

As long as you set up the camera/scene/focus, you'll be fine.
I know that no one can actually prove that you did those things, but I'd also feel very bad knowing that I'd cheated.. I don't have the infrared remote for the 300D yet, so I've been going with the push shutter, run like heck, pose, *click!* method.
Good luck! |
