what average will someone need to win the bridge challenge?
02/12/2005 02:25:36 AM · #2
hrmm.. I'd say between 6.9 and 7.5.

From memory, I don't think have been any 8.0 shots in an open challenge, have there?

I've noticed that in the open challenges, the scores tend to be lower than in members challenges, so I don't think there will be an 8.0 shot.

Edited to add, I mean since they members challenges came into play.

Since i deliberatly ignored the Brown Ribbon instrucitons to a T, i think i will win.
based on my overall average, that will mean a 5.5 or so will win.
That means everyone wil ahve to enter pics that follow the Brown Ribbon instrucions as closely as possible.

I voted earlier today on the Pain challenge. I think that can be won with a low score, so then bridges will require a high score...7.3 or more.

If I'm right, what color Ribbon do i get?

I'd say it will be in the same vicinity as most of the challenges - it's an open challenge for one - so the scores will likely be a bit lower. Also, while I predict there will be a lot of beautiful shots, there will be a lot of incredibly similar shots, which will likely bring the overall averages down (Brooklyn bridge/golden gate bride/london tower anyone ?? Hell, there aren't many aussies on this site but I'd be surprised if we didn't see at least one or two sydney harbour bridges.

So if you want me to give you a number I'll throw 7.2 out there.

I hate to say it.. but the DPC Site bias will probably mean a popular, more reknowned bridge will have the likeliest chance of winning it too.
A fantastic shot of the Golden Gate, or the Brooklyn, or London Bridges.. will surely have more mass appeal than a fantastic shot of some train tressel or common car bridge that nobody knows about. I'm still very up in the air about even entering this challenge. We've some bridges around here.. but nothing spectacular. Mostly old, run down, poorly kept things that are a bitch to try and find an interesting angle with .. (although I'm sure that winning angle is there).. I just despair competeing with internationally well-known bridges. lol.

*sigh*.

I'd like to see something from around here do well - I live outside Pittsburgh, and the county it is in is #2 in the world for bridges, only behind venice, italy.

First we must define what we call a "bridge". We will use the National Bridge Inspection Standard (NBIS) definition of a structure length of 20 feet or greater. Defining what is meant by "Pittsburgh" is more problematic. Pittsburgh is composed of a large number of small communities that are unified by the city's bridges. What people generally consider "the 'burgh" is a larger area than simply the confines of the city limits. It is appropriate to consider greater Pittsburgh as consisting of Allegheny County.
Next there is the issue of ownership. Various authorities have ownership of individual bridges in the Pittsburgh area. The breakdown is as follows:

Allegheny County: 186
City of Pittsburgh: 74
State owned: 565
Others, including other towns and the Port authority: 119

Thus, there is a total of 944 highway bridges in greater Pittsburgh (Allegheny County). This does not include railroad bridges.
No matter how ya' cut it, there are a heck of a lot of bridges in Pittsburgh. At least one of them has to be photogenic enough to score well!

Of course my entry is from Beaver county, right next door.

Let's not limit ourselves here: the challenge descroption is begging for aome out-of-the-box thinking:

The challenge is to photograph a bridge. A bridge may provide you passage across a river or you may be bridging from one state of mind to another. A bridge is not always a physical structure. Let your imagination run freely as you choose a bridge to photograph.

That said, the chances that a non-physical bridge shot will ribbon is vanishingly small IMO. Bear in mind, also, it's a basic editing contest, so the scores won't be that high 'cuz thatol' photoshop magic won't rear its head, and if any subject cries out for tweaking it is bridge shots.

I took 50 or 60 bridge shots today - damnably cold too. in the low teens at sunrise time. I got some potentially good shots, and 1 worthy of entering and expecting above 5 from the voters. The rest, as bear_music states, need selective work in PS to make them really good. I still think my one good shot (the 3rd one taken today) is the best candidate.

If only I had a wide angle lens! 28mm on a 1.6x dSLR just doens't cut it at times! One day, some day...
