Anybody care to share some insight on how to shoot in the rain? I got my D70 nearly a month ago, but life has conspired to keep me from taking it very far from home. When my weekends are free, the weather doesn't want to cooperate, so I'm hoping to find a way to go out in the rain without jeopardizing the safety of my camera. Ideas? |

1. Don't get the camera wet.

I thought you lived out in California where you all get like 12" of rain a year or something. Plan on traveling?
I think we get like 80 here.

I use a plastic bag, and put a hole in the bottom for the lens. Put my head in the bag and shoot.
Best way is to get a fully water proof enclosure, but those start at a couple of hundred bucks. |

Don't you sleep?
Yes, the San Diego area normally gets something like 9" per year. So far this season, we've already had 12" I think.
"1. Don't get the camera wet."
Um... Do ya think? Thanks for the insight! LOL |

That's ironic! I've been told before to go put my head in a bag. I just never thought anything good would come of it.
Seriously, though. How do you protect the lens from the water? Or are they fairly moisture-resistant? |

Fixin to. Eyes are getting a little tired. Was up working on some pictures. I have to get up in about five hours, so I can probably stay up another hour or so.

I bought a product called an Elements Cover, made by Kata. It is a plastic (soft) clear cover that has hand entry holes in on two sides that have drawstrings to keep tight, The lens fits into a front sleeve that has a velcro fastener that closes around the lens hood. Works pretty well. I used it on an Eagle Float trip. Down side is it cost around $50 US.

I use a ziploc gallon freezer baggie, cut a circle out of the bottom a little smaller than the lens diameter, "snap" the lens in and it works pretty good. The 5700's a smaller cam the canon though, may need one of the extra big baggies for that and your hands.
I have gotten stray moisture on many cameras through the years, in the rain, never hurt 'em. Just keep soft, absorbent, lint-free towels handy. Of course, you can't expose your camera to a deluge, but a little mist and drizzle wasn't bad. I used to have a "harness" that strapped a golf umbrella verically to my back, those are like 4 foot diameter, worked fine for light rain if it wasn't windy... No idea what happened to the harness, that was years ago.
Robt.

Thanks for the suggestions. Since I'm at least as cheap as the next guy, I'll start off by trying something like the baggie idea. With any luck, maybe I'll have something to post by this time tomorrow night. |

Just checked out the Elements Cover. FYI, it's $39.95. Crappy pictures of the product on the website, though. You'd think they could do better. Makes it REALLY hard to get a good idea of what the product is. Maybe they took the shots in the rain!? |

Another downside to the Elements is it is large. Made to fit an SLR even with a large lens. With my D70 and a Tamron 28-300 there is lots of empty space. But when I eventually get that $5,000 Nikon 200-500 F4 VR .................

OK. I put the camera in a bag & went out in the rain today. Here's a few of the results.

After shooting today, I realize that I really need a telephoto lens. |
