Since my CD-R wasn't working properly I wasn't backing up my photos. Just got a laptop with a DVD-R and the external drive stops working. does anybody know of good reputable places that do recovery services? My local repair shop says they can't do it but there are places out there that will. The one they recommended will cost 2000...I lost almost 20,000 photos including my portfolio so am a little stressed. Any suggestions? |

There were a couple places recommended in thisthread. Any service like this is going to be expensive, however.

If you didn't fry the drive, I mean if it just physically stopped running it is not hard at all to recover the information yourself. I did one last year and my son has probably done about six or seven in the last year alone.

The casing is warped? Scary. Does it smell burnt?

no there was never any burning smell or hot smell coming from the drive ever. so I am not sure how or why the casing would warp. It is down one side. |

Ya know, I didn't have the photos organized at all and was thinking about getting Extensis this month to help manage the files. Was really dreading the thought of having to organize all of them...guess this saves me the trouble hey?? Still...20,000 photos...OUCH!!! |

You didn't drop it or run it over with your car?
Do you own a small screwdriver set, like a jewler's kit or a small phillips? If you do pull the cover off and tell me what you see. You can't hurt it by doing this. Also what brand and model # is it?

OK, I have a 1800 sitting right here on my desk. Same exact design. Six small star screws hold down the top cover. You may need to make a trip to Wal-mart to get a star wrench set or a jewler's screwdriver set. $5-10.

I can't help you there because every one of those things is made different. If it has plastic end caps it may snap together. See if there aren't some little indentions on the edge of the caps. Get it apart and I can help you from there.

If the inside looks fine don't take it apart yet. Do you have a PC handy. Are you typing on one now or are you on a laptop?

Do you know how to set jumpers and hook an extra internal drive to your computer? Not hard.
The point is there may be nothing wrong with the drive itself. It may be the conections in the housing that were messed up.

It's the same as installing the CD drive.
You want to set the jumpers on the HD to cable Select.
Look on the end of the end of the HD where it plugs in. You will see three sets of prongs. One set will have 39. The next will have 10. These ten are your jumper prongs. Do you see a little black or white plastic jumper connecting two of the prongs?

OK. It is time for minor surgery. Nothing painful I promise.
You are going to have to turn off your computer for as few minutes so let me go ahead and tell you every thing you will need to do.
1. Turn off your computer (after you read this of course). Unplug it.
2. Open the case.
3. Unplug the CD or DVD drive. Leave it in place if you can.
4. Steal the jumper from the back of the CD drive, but remember where it was set. You may need tweezers for this.
5. Install the jumper in the HD. Turn the HD so that the green circuit board is facing up. Where the board corresponds to the jumper prongs you will see little white letters that say: CS Slave Master (blank) PW2. Put the jumper across the two prongs that correspond to the CS (Cable Select)
6. Take the four prong power plug and the 40 prong plug that came of the CD drive and connect them to the HD. Just let the HD hang where it is for the moment being careful not to let the green circuit board come in contact with anything metallic.
7. Plug in and restart your computer.
8. Right click on Start, click on Explore All Users and see if you now have an additional drive on you computer. (make sure the Explore Bar under View is set to Folders) If the drive shows up in My Computer expand the drive folder and check to see if your files are OK.
This should all take you less time to do then it took me to type.
Any problems get back with me. If it doesn̢۪t work I will tell you how to salvage the disk in your drive tomorrow.
PS: you may want to print this out before you turn off the computer. Just a thought.
