I expect that this topic has been discussed before, but I'd like to get some opinions (something tells me that won't be much trouble here).
I'm considering the ramifications of selective voting, particularly in the Pink challenge. I just don't think I can wade thru that much pink without burning my retinas. What I'm considering is to just vote on the images that catch my eye, which, hopefully, would be the better images in the challenge. I realise this might be (considered)unfair to the other entries.
What do you think? Does anyone else vote that way? Yes/no. Often/rarely. Should I just abstain? |

I think you should tough it out and vote on all of them.
It's not that bad I have done it and reviewed as well.

I think if you entered it is only fair to vote on em all, ok I accept that modem users can have difficulty, in that case I wouldn't vote at all.
just my opinion of course.

I know that some do vote this way. My personal feeling is that we should not. I never do. The reason that photos are presented in random order is to try to ensure that every photo gets equal consideration from voters, even if few voters vote on all images. Also bear in mind that some great photos look plain ugly at thumbnail size, so by picking and choosing from thumbs, you'd be "prejudging" using a potentially poor gauge of quality.

I for one have made it a point to vote on every single entry made on the challenges I have opted to vote on. I do this only because I ernestly believe that I would be doing a disservice to the people that took the time and put in the effort to make a submission.
It is my opinion that the time that it might take me to vote, pales by comparisson to the time put forth by the individuals who submitted the photo. In addition, I also strive to provide comments not only to the really great pics, but also to those that I may have scored lower. I am one of those people who has yet to do well relative to the truly capable people in this venue, and I do cherish every single commment I receive, particularly those that point out my deficiencies, as it is only through critical anyalysis that I can truly hope to learn.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I don't do it often but I did exactly what you are talking about in the Pink. No way I was going to wade through all that pink slime, sorry. Do what you like and don't let anyone tell you you have to vote on all of them. The site rules clearly state that You must vote on at least 20% of the photographs for your votes to be counted.
There are 268 images in the Pink challenge. 20% would be 54. That's all you need vote on.

My usual approach is to try and vvote and comment on shots as they come up; I don't bother about whether I get through them all. Cherry-picking the images from thumbnails is however unfair I think - both on yourself and the photographers: you just can't get a real idea of the shot from the thumb.

I personally sit down and go through at least 20% of the votes in my first sitting. I go straight through. After that, then I will go as I have time. I also never vote selectively, because it defeats the purpose of random voting.
Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the replies. I think I may just sit this one out to be fair.
re: your responses
I didn't enter the Pink challenge.
I agree that the thumbs can hide a great picture, but I generally don't think they do.
Pain is only my 2nd challenge, but I'm in the same boat as you, Ray, in terms of "doing well relative to the truly capable people in this venue." I voted for the first time in the Pain challenge, and made an effort to comment as much as possible. To be honest, some of them just showed a total lack of effort to me, so I didn't comment on them.
nsbca7: what's beginning to scare me is how often you say what I'm thinking. |

A late opinion, with the disclaimer I have an entry in pink. Honestly, I don't know what people are complaining about. Sure there's lots of pink. Yet, I haven't given out that many high scores in quite a while, and I'll probably go through again and bump. And I'm not crazy about pink. There are simply quite a surprising number of excellent shots there.
I also voted completely through pain, though I found the images much more disturbing and yes, painful. It's a tough challenge to enter and vote on.
Maybe you should vote pain, then pink, to recover from the depression ;)
Or if you don't vote, just breeze through and enjoy them. Even if that's selectively. Just my two cents. |

Actually, it would work the other way around for me! |
