There was a similar thread on another website and I thought I'd start one here. I dont have a studio or room to set anything up even though I own a full set up.

This is it. Right now it is all I have to work with. Think I need to get some stuff. I will once I get a job again. No work, no toys. The good news, I have many different watt bulbs

Are you cute? Do you do laundry? If so, set a date!

Huge studio area, small lights. :-).
I thought I had a 'setup' shot for this... But it was taken in the lounge, with a stretch-velvet backdrop.. one 60" silver brolly high and to the left, and a big white reflector on the right. The backdrop is just tied up on a curtain rail.
'Small product' setup. Home made softbox with a Vivita 285 in the back of it. There's three layers of mylar drafting film in the box, one on the front, and the other two spaced evenly front to back.. Works well. This was the setup for my wacky foods entry. I do a bit of product photography this way for a couple of friends websites. (Powershot G5 on the tripod)
Generally I prefer the challenge of working with lights on location to enhance the environment...
This is an outtake from before Xmas done for some friends. Most of the shooting I do for money is this type of stuff at the moment. Portraits of people in their homes/gardens.
I feel the portraits are a bit more natural, and they bring with them a whole lot of challenges trying to get good control over the lighting in different situations. And in this case balancing the manual flash settings vs the sunlight on the adjacent house. (There is another white shoot-through brolly to the left in this shot.)
If you're really curious I can take a shot of my 'mobile' kit...
Cheers, Chris H.

Why the black sheets? Do you have some stray light or bright white walls behind the camera position? Just curious...

Here's mine. I just recently got it together. I think I may need to change the wall color, I really don't want to, I like the orange. |

Ok, here's what I have been using until last month.
I try to balance the light using white boards and available light. I walk around looking for shadows as I don't have much control over these lights.

All I have is large paper backings...with 2 500watt floor lamps... worklights from home depot $8.97 each. work great and lots of light. sorry no photo of the setup as I move it around to suit my needs, sometimes bouncing the light off mirrors, etc....
