My brother has a Canon 10D with a macro lens only. For his birthday I'd like to give him a cheap lens, such as EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6II, EF 28-105mm DC, EF 50 mm f/1.8 or the even Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 (the only budget options in my country). I've read lousy things about each one of them, so I was hoping for some advice in choosing the least lousy of these lens I referred.
Thank you for your help.

I have the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 and it seems fine. NOt the quality of my Canon L lenses, but no where the cost or weight. I only use it for snap shots, not for anything I might want to sell. You get what you pay for. Cheap lenses will never get great reviews. |

There is no doubt in my mind that a 50mm1.8 would be the best present your brother gets this year.
What lousy things have you heard about it? The only thing that I've heard is the build quality - but that's why it's only $75!

What lens does he have now?
Of the ones you listed the 50mm f1.8 is by far the best quality lens. But if he has a limited number of lenses to work with a zoom may be a lot more useful to him. The 28-105 would be my suggestion.

Look at Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX,$499, looks very sharp lens. |

The 50 1.8 is a sharp, light, small and fast lens. And it's only $70! Amazing lens. gwphoto is wrong, the 50 F1.8 has the optical quality of an L lens, but is not made as durable as an L.
Edit: Excellent portrait lens! I've sold hundreds of photos taken with that lens!
Edit again: The 50 F1.8 is a tad soft below F4, but if you're using a flash or strobes, no problem!

The Canon 50mm 1.8 markII would be my choice as well. While slightly built it is quick focusing and very sharp. At 50mm with the 1.6 crop it is a 80mm equivalent, and that is about the length you want for portraits. At it's price you will not find a better lens for the dollar ( or euro ). |

If you want a better 50mm lens, get the 50 F1.4 USM. That there's an awesome lens, wish I had it! |

Looks like the Ef 50 mm f1.8 wins...
