I'm thinking of blowing my tax refund on some new equipment, especially a new macro lens. Anyone have thoughts on the Nikon 60/2.8 macro vs the 105/2.8 macro? Both have rebates right now, but the 105 costs more. Thanks for your input. |

What are you planning to shoot?

Mostly still lifes (geared towards stock) but non-bug related. (well, maybe a couple of dead ones to compete with Jacko).
Maybe I'd try it for portraits too. |

The one o five will be a better portrait lens and will work better from a slight distance on macros as opposed to being right up on something with the sixty. The sixty will have more area in focus at any given aperture setting, which helps with extreme close-ups with limited light such as insect macros, but the the greater DOF is not an advantage when doing most portraiture. The one o five would in your case probably be the more versitile.
Chose wisely.

I have the 60 and am very happy with it. The lens to subject distance can be a problem some times. The 105 would not have this problem. The 105 when used on a D70 could be a bit long for a portait lens. |

I have the 60mm and use it as my main lens (at least it's the one which is attached to the body when the camera goes to bed...)
I agree 100% with Baxter, and I find the 60 very good for portraiture. |

I just bought the Sigma 105mm f2.8 (canon fit) it is excellent. I highly recommend it.

My heart is set on the 105mm, currently I'm using a BR-2A with my 50mm, and am intending to get a set of close-up filters to serve me between now and the chance of a 105mm purchase.

Thanks everyone. I guess I have a little more research to do. |
