Am playing with my new 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and trying to get a good macro of my eye. Tips on how to do this properly would be most welcome, focussing is a bi**h. This was taken with onboard flash whilst holding a desk lamp.

i'd say inch back a bit so there is a larger dof and of course a larger aperture if light permits it. also the only way to give the brilliance of an eye justice is... COLOR.

try prefocusing on an object at about the distance that will provide you with the magnification your aiming for. Then tape a straw, popcicle stick etc to the side of your lens or the bottom of the camera with masking tape so that when it contacts the bridge of your nose you know you have the correct distance. However be sure that the "framer" doesn't cast a shadow in the frame or is actually in the frame (at this magnifcation it shouldn't be in the frame). Also a little masking tape on the focusing ring will insure no focus creep, but make sure AF is off first.

I love eye shots, but I can never get mine to come out quite as detailed as yours. I am curious to see how you guys go about this.

I had a heck of a time doing these as well. Here's my best result.

I am trying to do this now. I noticed when I changed my iso from 50 to 200 the detail was a lot better.
