Ok so I have innored all the thousands of threads about model release forms and such, but i do have a question

A friend has asked to hire me to shoot head shots of her sons band for the 8x10 B&W press release photo that is needed, plus an album cover style photo. They are meeting with a few record companies next month.

I want to ensure that they( the band guys) can use the photos, but if they get any contracts or such I want to make sure I retain rights to the photos, or I get paid for their use.

I have looked over some of the model release forms, but im a bit confused on which one I should use

Which ones have you looked at? There are a thousand ways to write up a legal model release.

The reason you are having problems with finding an appropriate model release is because your "issue" of retaining rights and getting paid "if" has nothing to do with getting model releases.

You automatically own the copyright, unless you are hired under a "work for hire" agreement. If the band uses your photos, you can choose to let them use them for free UNTIL ...

My advice is a letter of agreement.

Get these books. A MUST for any serious photogs library:

Business and Legal Forms for Photographers (Business and Legal Forms)
by Tad Crawford (Paperback - January 1, 2002)

Legal Handbook for Photographers: The Rights and Liabilities of Making Images by Bert P. Krages, Bert Krages (Paperback - September 1, 2001)
