Hey everyone,

Ive never really worked in a studio (yet) and have yet to use many flash (umbrella or Softbox). But one thing that bugs me is the mentionned in camera descriptions and such. For exemple, the Nikon D70 has a flash sync of 1/500, while the Canon 20D has a flash sync of 1/250.

Does it mean that the camera must at least be at 1/500s (or 250) to successfully use a flash, synchronized with the capture, or does it mean the camera can be at a maximum of 1/500s (or 250) to successfully synchronise? Im a bit confused over the whole thing.

Thanks for your help!

I believe the values given are the max shutter speed at which the camera can still sync the flash, faster shutter times=no flash. I am very much a beginner myself though...

wow quite in-depth. I think it's too early for me to soak all that in.

In short, it's the fastest shutter speed you can use flash with predictably. One of the D70's major strengths is its flash capabilities.
