no such thing as a tripod that's especially good for a particular camera. the heavier the tripod, the more sturdy the camera.
i bought a used bogen 3001BPRO from B&H Photo for 80 bucks and i love it

I just bought the bogen 3021bn from B&H photo....it holds a heavier weight....and I have a battery grip and long lens on my camera....so it's a little heavier and this tripod is working out great. |

Hi,
Do not skimp on tripods. All it takes is one tip over from a light weight tripod to really ruin your day. I have a SLIK ABLE 300DX which has a 11.1lb capacity for about $100. I don't intend to put 11lbs on the tripod, but I always want my tripod to hold more than what I put on it to diminsh the chance of a tip over.

It really depends on your price point...ultimately, I would argue that the best bang for your buck is the 3021(b)pro from manfrotto. I love it. I would also argue that the best value for the head is the 322rc2. I researched these and am ecstatic with my decision.
This combo will cost you around $250-$300 USD.

I am going to get a Manfrotto 055 pro (bogen code 3021), and I am trying to choose between the 222 - Bogen code 3265 and the 322rc2.
thatcloudthere loves his 33rc2. Has anyone got/used the 222 and can tell me what they think.
Also, annoying being in the UK as it will add upto about £200 (£180 with the 222).

It's not just a tripod you're buying - it's also a space rifle!

man, he looks so young there!
I have 2 cheap tripods. They work, and hte lightness is wonderful. Not as sturdy as as hte Bogen 3021, but it weighs as much as my car i think.
How tall do you need it to be? if you have to stoop to use it, or extend the center post (compromising the stability you got a tripod for)
how low do you need to go, or other feature (spiked feet, etc)
weight. If you be carrying it all day, this matters more than you can imagine.
Head...pan and tilt ( i hat them...), ball head or what i am eaning towrad are the one handed ball head types. Do you need a level, panorama capability, etc.

Like a tripod there ae three legs to this question.
Weight. The heavier the more solid the support. Studio tripods are HEAVY and hence solid as a rock. Good back backing tripods are light as a feather but very stiff. Although light weight is less solid support, if it is too heavy to bring along it is no good to you. Figure out what your camera weighs with the heaviest lens you are likely to own, plus flash and beamer or whatever and use that number as the minimum weight you need. If you use a 100-400 is with a big flash with a gimble you need a heavier minimum support than if you are shooting landscapes with a 17-40.
Cost The more you spend the better the head and the stiffer it is for the weight (generally) A five pound $25 tripod will not be as fluid in movment of as stiff a support as a five pound $225 tripod.
portability How easy is it to transport? Is it light, is it compact? Does it attach easily to your favorite camera bag with a minimum number of hooks and latches to snag on things as you walk through a crowd? nothing like having your whole bag leap off your sholder because your tripod was not designed to be be hard to snag on things. Does the head crank fold in between the legs? Are the leg section cams arms smooth when folded home? If the tripod is onerous to carry it will only come out when you are sure you will absolutely need it. If it carries easily you will have it when you didn't know it would be needed, and that makes spending the extra $ worth it. |

I hate to add a fourth leg to your tripod, but I will:
Versatility:
Do you need the center column to be mountable both horizontally and vertically? What's the maximum height you need? How low do you need to go? Will you be working at strange angles?
How quickly do you need to adjust from one position to another? Do you need quick snaps to lock/unlock the legs quickly? Do you need a centre column that comes apart for quick lowering of the tripod?
These were all important to me, which is why I went with the 3021bpro...like I said, I love this thing!

Hopefully this £172 will be a dream combination. Fingers crossed!

This is some stuff out of the Monopod Forum I posted earlier.
... GRIP ACTION BALL HEAD Code: 222 - 3265
I wanted something that's a Quick Rotate Head because if I'm doing any candid shots and/or sports, well anything really I wanted to be able to rotage the camera quickly with one hand and not have to worry about how I'm going to hold the Monopod and adjust the camera head.
I've used it quite a bit and it's very handy, just leave it in the car.
Also
Everyone is different but I for one just love the thing. You can't beat a one hand operation, when you only have a one hand to use ;-) (Something has to hold the monopod in place and that's usually the other hand). I also purchased this 3265 Head because it's interchangeable with the Product Code: 055PRO - Bogen code (USA only): 3021PRO - But it also give me a few extra inches due to it's height.
Anyways, it's not the cheapest head but with a 5 year warranty and the convenience I would not buy anything else, especially when we are talking about using it with a monopod.
In the end, I personally love the 222 Head... |
