Thanks for starting this; having made over 5x the comments I have received I don't feel so bad about not being able to comment anymore.

Comments Made 431, Comments Helpful 327 - thats 76%. But what makes me and probably other comment less that what we would is some people don't take the time to say it was helpful. Good example [without mentioning names] is a recent Blue ribbon winner with 70 comments received and the photographer did not check a single one as helpful. I think you know which picture. And there were great comments and the photograph was great as well. Sometimes I feel, why comment if there just going to ignore the comment?.

Thanks to the 'best of challenge' my spread is looking fairly healthy. I'm surprised at how much impact that little helpful click makes - when I first arrived here I thought it was silly, and that people used it waaaaay too much. But now that I've been here a while, I've noticed that it really does provide a nice way of acknowledging a comment - and it is irritating when you provide a constructive comment that isn't marked helpful. I know that in the past I've left 4 line comments on an image explaining how I thought it could be bettered, and then I look at the image and other comments simply saying something like 'I like this' have been marked helpful while mine has not.

Human nature I guess, I'm sure I've been guilty of it myself a few times - though to be honest, of the negative comments I've received so far, most have been three word wonders, rather than considered criticisms.

i agree whole-heartedly. it's not perfect, and it does mean lots of things to lots of people, but that little sure goes a long ways.

You ain't doing so bad yourself skip :). Your still sporting a + 1500 odd scoreline yourself. I think Butterflysis and bear music might still win the ratio game though!

Actually, wait, it's not even close.

Nordicgirl

Wins by a mile. She's made 55 times more comments than she's received!

That's both brilliant and crazy!

My current challenge shot has over 150 votes, and just last night I received my first comment.

Yeah - I think it must be comment fatigue due to the amount of challenges there have been in the last couple of weeks - with the 48 hour challenge and the best of challenge in addition to the normal fare. My three challenge entry is currently my second best score ever, and has been sitting on 11 comments for 3 days, and my light challenge entry would be my 3rd best score ever and has only 3 comments (all of which came in the first 3 hours).

I think it would be nice for DPC to add to the stats in our profile under comments received put a 'COMMENTS YOU MARK HELPFUL' out of the comments you receive. Maybe more people would be out to take the time to Compliment the effort others made while commenting. Just a suggestion!

You guys are killing me...now I feel even worse. I agree that it helps when they are checked helpful. I think I have only not checked one helpful and it was just a score of 4 with no explanation. ?

407 given...7 more than yesterday :D

I do think my comments are most often helpful, though I do sometimes write a comment simply to congratulate someone.

And like BradP expressed below, I wish people would simply acknowledge them with a checkmark. Unless they really feel they weren't helpful. That way, I could go back and look at what I said, and maybe I was wrong, or not courteous enough. That would help me improve my critques/comments.

My 2 challenge entries must be soooooo middle of everything LOL hardly noticable, hardly get any comments but a record score of 5's. I'm having fun though and seeing some incredible photos along the way, maybe I'll pick up a trick or two along the way :)

I've got to come back and echo this. I tend to comment in spurts, when I have time, and it divides between really commenting through a challenge, or just poking through archives, portfolios, and forum requests for comments. When you're commenting during a challenge, you really can't have any anticipation of how it is going to be received...and neither can you expect a response when you are giving out unsolicited comments,

BUT WHEN SOMEBODY ASK FOR COMMENTS AND GETS THEM AND DOESN'T ACKNOWLEDGE THEM IN ANY WAY, THAT'S JUST PLAIN RUDE!

no, we're all the better for it, especially since your removing yourself from the competition makes us all one place closer to the top. keep it up!

Skip, you have left me some helful comments and I am pretty sure I thanked you for them but I'll just say it again to be safe....Thanks!

As far as the check mark goes for helpful. I think they are getting left unchecked more because of the new feature to view your recieved comments. It doesnt allow you to check them in that window and people are probably just not going into the picture to check it because of laziness or they forget. I sometimes forget but notice it later.

I think Kat is right - it is a bit of a hassle for when people are really busy that they can't check it off right in the column. And I am sure some are simply missed unknowingly. But overall, I agree that I at least try to check the box and follow up whenever I can personally. I apologize to anyone right now that I haven't had the chance to say thanks to.

but I've only been around just under a year!

I personally don't care if I get comments or not. I use the helpful box to know which ones I've seen (unless it's so rediculously unhelpful that it makes me sick, which I've had a few of) but most are actually helpful. I have commented on about 33% (give or take) of those I voted on. This is only because I don't always have something helpful to say, or an anicdote to give.

Joe
