I really enjoy taking cityscapes and am looking for a versatile sharp lens that will do well in taking wide shots with clarity and sharpness both day and night. They have to fit a Canon DSLR...any ideas?

Sigma 18mm-125mm
Sigma builds lenses for different camera types, including Nikon and Canon, and this lense is built specifically for digital cameras so it compensates for the natural digital zoom.
Haven't used it at night yet, but I've used it for Sunsets and High Noon, as well as Infrared with no problem or distortion.

I currently use the Canon 17-40mm f/4L. It's an awesome lens, although if I had the money I would probably upgrade to the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L for shooting aurora and indoor photos. I had the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX, but I just wasn't that happy with it.
Examples (Shot with 10D):

And this is really my only cityscape when I was in Denver (not with the 17-40mm but with the Canon 28-105mm... probably not wide enough for you).... living in a small town sucks :)

Tamron 28-75 XR Di f/2.8- it's a great daytime lens with a decent zoom range, and f/2.8 makes it good for low light, too. It's only $369.
I took this shot handheld at night through a car window at 55mph. How's that for a torture test? Obviously, a tripod-mounted still photo at lower ISO would be sharper.
