Hi all,
It was fun Sat. at Downtown. I like Hollywood myself. I've shot numerous times there myself but I'll be interested to see how others "see" things with their photographic eye. The Mann's Chinese is always nice and there are people dressed as characters posing for tourists. There is also the Hollywood and Vine complex as well. Maybe we can see who has the best telephoto shot of the "Hollywood" sign from there. We can then walk by the wax museum, max factor museum, Ripley's museum, and the Egyptian Theather, the Pigley Wigley bar, and a few other spots. We can then drive to Melrose if we want to or better yet, walk down Sunset with all the signs/neon signs at night. Plus the Sunset Blvd. offers a really nice nighttime view of LA as you look down the hill southward.
Tom

Tom...

It was good meeting you and I'm glad to see you signed up here! Hollywood sounds fun and if I can make it, I certainly will go! Post your photos... we would love to see them! Mine are here!

I have a suggestion... since we want to get some fun tourist shots, we should go on Sunday instead of Monday. I think that many people will be off of work on Monday (Pres Day), but Sunday is a day that we can be sure to get lots of people in costume in front of Mann's.

AND, if we want to get night shots of Sunset Strip, I don't want to be out late on Monday. So, Sunday would work better for me for afternoon/evening/night photography.

So, Feb 20th then? Any thoughts?

Sandman, hop on the Redline and meet us at Hollywood & Highland. We can drop you back off there at the end of the evening! And yes, bring your Nikon! We respect Nikon... we just love Canon more!!!

Arie and I were talking about doing night shooting in Pasadena next Tuesday night. Should take less than 3 hours to hit the Colorado street, City Hall, Pasadena Auditorium, Paseo Colorado plaza (they don't let you shoot on there premises, but I shoot all the lights from across the street, he he), Colorado Bridge/courthouse, and a really cool/tall Church tower. We can even include the 210 Fwy if we like. I asked her to post a few pics I took in the past to entice everyone to join.

Chuck, I already saw your pics, nice. The shot of me was of me holding my aching back. ha ha. Should have taken some motrin. Oh well, it was too fun.
As for the 20th Sunday, it is fine with me as well. I think Sunday will be better. I'd recommend tele lens for the costumed folks posing with the tourists, as if they see you take pics of them, then they demand a dollar or two. I'd really recommend walking down Sunset Blvd. All the neon lights and signs will make wonderful night shots. There are a few spots where you can look down hill south and see nothing but a sea of lights. I'm already drooling to take those shots. We can all practice and dust off our tripods next Tuesday at Pasadena as well.

Well next Tuesday in Pasadena is out for me...that's just too hard to do, but I know you guys will have fun... There are some wonderful places out in the area (I grew up out there). As for the Colorado Bridge, I used to photograph it years ago with film... It looks great in B&W. I don't know if it's still possible to do, but I used to climb about 20 or 30 feet down the grass hill on the East Side of the bridge and shoot from there. You get really nice perspective from there and some nice curves and lines. Can't wait to see what you guys get.

Chuck,
I've never tried climbing down, but the area is chain fenced off. Plus I'd be too chicken about falling down the hill with all the gear.
02/01/2005 11:08:32 PM · #33
I know how to get to the park down there, but I don't know how to climb down the hill without getting hurt! I think the park closes at sunset too. So, we'll probably just be going for lights.

Tom,
We should meet somewhere easy to park. I think we can park in front of City Hall after 5pm without having to pay the meter. Want to meet there?

Actually, I live a few blocks from there. If you don't mind, can you pick me up and we can drive there. Plus they all say where light or reflective clothing when shooitng at night so you don't get hit by cars. he he

You can now park at Hollywood and Highlnad's massive underground parking lot, and if get your parking stub validated, it is relatively cheap. About $2 or so for upto 4 hours, if I remember correctly.

Don't you have to see a movie to get it validated? I thought it was $4 with validation... I can't remember. Let me know if you find out :)

I can't remember the exact amount. But I do remember it being very reasonable (less than $5). You can also get validation from places like Starbucks/Ice cream shop, etc. We'd need to drive from Hollywood to Sunset and park there (as it is too far to walk there) and that will be expensive. We can carpool from a central location as well. I've no real preference and sunday is a relaxing day for me, so I don't mind driving the carpool car. I'm pretty flexible.

I'll be in Laguna Beach this Saturday. Anybody around?

Sadly no, I'll be in FL for a wedding. Sorry to miss you :(

Happens to me all the time. If you only left L.A. one day this year, that would be the day. :-(

Saturday morning I am going whale watching (you can see my latest photos here. I'm going on a boat out of Long Beach (Long Beach Sportfishing) that leaves at 10AM for a three hour tour (cue Gilligan's Island music). Even if we don't see whales, the seabirds, sea lions and dolphins have been great photo subjects.

The fare is $12 for adults - $10 for kids/seniors.

I'm now a docent with the whale watch program and have been going out most weekends. The Pacific gray whale migrates past SoCal from December to March.

I did a little photo safari downtown on Monday as I had jury duty and a two hour lunch break.

I'd like to go out to Huntington Gardens again soon too.

I fly into Long Beach at 2PM. Too late for Whale Watching, I'm afraid.

Your photos are great! I really would love to go sometime, but I am afraid I won't be able to this whale watching season. I'll have to wait til next year.

The Huntington Gardens are nice! I get to go with my work once in a while. I am sadly, in charge of the event, which means that I need to stay with the tour group in the museum, and not go wandering off into the gardens. I wish I could stay longer, but I always have to carpool with work. :(

I am heading to FL for the weekend. If you don't see posts from me all weekend, that's why :) I have a wedding to photograph! Wish me luck!

Anyhow, Tom, see you Tuesday. Everyone else, see you on the 20th for some Hollywood fun! :)

Arie, You will do great on the wedding and I would love to see some of the shots when you get back. On the other hand I just got a full week Miami shoot I have to leave for on the 13th... bummer, I have to miss Valentines day with my wife.

Have a great time in Fl, and talk to ya when ya get back,

John

What's going on Tuesday (2/8)? You, Tom and Arie, meeting up for some night photography in Pasadena? If so, I'd love to join you two as I wanted to get some night shots along Colorado and some of the side streets.

Greg,
Arie and I are going to do some night shooting in Pasadena next Tuesday night. We'll meet at about 5PM by the cityhall and start from there. Should take less than 3 hours to hit Colorado street, City Hall, Pasadena Auditorium, Paseo Colorado plaza (they don't let you shoot on there premises, but I shoot all the lights from across the street, he he), Colorado Bridge/courthouse, and a really cool/tall Church tower. We can even include the 210 Fwy if we like. If you are interested, bring a light colored shirt so you don't get run over by a car and your tripod.

Sounds like a good time and I'll try to make it! :)
