I have a sony f717, I had a chance to take some pics of some deer earlier today and my I could pull them in close enough without going into my digital zoom which I don't like to do. I was wondering if there was anthing I could do to beef up my optical zoom, without buying a new camera? If so What? Where? and How much? Thanks in advance. |

Hi,
Sony make a teleconvertor, i couldnt find one new for you, but look here:
WIDEANGLE
They are PRICEY!
You can get a third party one probably off of ebay, but i heard they were pretty poor.
LIKE THIS
Ebays probably your best bet, look for a proper sony one, the glass is lots better. Think RAYNOX make some half decents ones, just look for 58mm thread ones, think there is a fisheye one i rather fancy!
Good luck dood!

I used to have a 707 and had a wide-angle conversion lens that screwed on the front. I know there are telephoto ones as well - here is one: teleconverter. Use google and you will find many more I am sure.

i've never used one but i have tried wide angles for the sony f707 and i did not like the result on it, i guess the teleconverter is just the same thing, but nothing like goign to the shop and try it out for yourself and see if you like the results.

I have a teleconverter and a wide angle for my 717. I honestly don't find the teleconverter to be used at all. It doesn't seem to do much of anything. Granted, it's a cheap one, so that might make a difference. Supposed to be a 2x teleconverter.
The wide angle I use a lot more. I'm a Realtor, and I use it alot for my interior home shots, but I also find I use it for my basic photography a lot more than I thought I would. The relatively small optical zoom is the biggest drawback I have with the 717. I never use the digital zoom - I'll just crop closer with the software if I want to do that. |

I had a Canon teleconverter (1.75x) which also fit on my Sony F717. I've used it a quite a lot for a few weeks, but in the end I was disappointed with it because of the degradation in image quality, so I sold it. Here's an example:
without teleconverter:
and from the same spot with teleconverter:
In the last one, the teleconverter causes noticeable blurring in the corners. BTW, both are taken at the tele-end of the optical zoom, I didn't use digital zoom.

using Sony VCL-R2052 52mm 2x Telephoto Converter Lens on a Sony S-70 rather then a f717.
Problems is vignetting and some extra chromatic abberations. Of course this add-on lens is not made for my camera but rather a Sony camcorder, but it works ok in a pinch.

Great pictures, and impressive image quality! And it seems quite a cheap converter, for such a good quality. Too bad it can't be used with the F717, it has a 52mm filter thread, while the F717 uses 58mm. |

you can buy both step up and step down rings from any photo shop. I have some made by Marumi the filter co and the work really well |

I purchased the step down ring also, just wondering if the smaller attachment will have a negative effect on the picture quality. |

No, only some small amount of vignetteing, or darkening at the corners, at the wide angle end of your zoom range. But you didn't get the TCON to shoot wide angle.
