I struggle with B/W conversion. In the past I think I've brightened images too much, but now I fear I'm making them too dark. ACK!! These were all done with the channel mixer, but I can't decide which brightness level is best. The mom ordered a copy of this collage at 10x13, and I am nervous to have it come back too dark or too light.
OPINIONS PLEASE!!
Thanks in advance!

I know what you mean about struggling with b&w; and this may be a personal preference thing, but I definitely like #3 the best.

I am a terrible judge myself, but in this case, I agree - #3. I think darker is good for art or mood sometimes, but for this type of thing, I would say lighter.

I think I like #3 best, as well. Very cute!

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will order the lighter one - there's nothing quite so convincing as a unanimous vote.

The trick really isn't black or white... it is tonal range.
You want your B&W images to have a full tonal range from absolute white to absolute black. Using the channel mixer checked for monotone can be adjusted to help achieve that result... as well as setting black and white points. B&W is very subtle to work with and get correct.
