Hey folks,

I'm new to this site (currently have 3 challenge entries being voted on) and very new to SLR photography (just got the 300D for Christmas) I am pretty photophobic when it comes to shooting in public places, especially when I fear that I'm doing something wrong or intruding.

I have an idea for an upcoming challenge that requires me to shoot inside of a store. Does anyone know the general rules (or etiquette) on this kind of thing? Would it be best if I asked permission so no one is suspicious? I was thinking of just saying I was doing an activity for a photo club (which is basically true)

Anyone have any experiences to share about this?

Check out some of the past threads, there are quite a few on this subject...basically I just ask someone in charge if its ok, most are ok with it as long as you aren't disturbing people or shooting propierty items. Good luck...oh and watch out for walmart...you'll find a thread on that.

Most stores don't allow photography for fear of competition, etc. If it's a smaller store (family-owned, for example), you might have luck if you talk to the owner.

As a buyer for a retail chain, I know that if I get caught writing down information or taking photos in a competitors store, I get kicked out. As a rule, they just don't allow it.

I also used to work in store management and know for certain that if somebody came up to me and asked me if they could shoot something specific for a photo club I would allow it. I recommend that you ask first...

Thanks guys, if I decide to run with my idea, I'll be asking for permission before trying anything.

If you do go and ask, which is certainly the best way to go, let us know what they say, and their reaction in general, please :)

I've asked a few times in supermarkets (I was shooting fruits and veggies) and they didn't have a problem with it. Can't take a camera into a courthouse though ...
