My photo did better than I have gotten before. However, I really don’t see why it would get 4-2s and 13-3s. (Unless it is just because it is a child in the photograph and I think that thinking is totally unfair. Heck, this isn’t my kid!) All my comments were very positive, so of course those that scored it low didn’t bother to tell me why. How do you “improve” if people don’t tell you what they see wrong?

What would you give this picture and why?

Thanks.

I gave it a 6, I thought it was a good photo but not a great one. It was more then just photo of a kid but, at least for me, not one that really caught my attention.

I am just now starting a photography class. Before now my extend of experience was just snapshots of my kids. So I don't expect greatness, yet.... :0)

Thanks for your comment. It is part of how I will learn.

Scores are given based on a number of reasons and may not be because the image suffers from technical problems. The only thing 'wrong' with the image could be that it does not communicate to the particular viewer in a strong or interesting enough way for someone to rate the image highly. On the flip side there are viewers who could be touched or enjoy the style or subject of the image and give it a high score. It all balances out in the end. When the dislike of an image is a completely personal opinion then it can be difficult to express in a comment, especially with people being so defensive of their images and how they feel people should vote.

Trying to work out why you got low votes is basically pointless. If the image has technical flaws then it's likely you'll receive at least some comments about it, but normally the glaring obvious ones are commented on repeatedly.

I left you a comment.

Don't think twice about the 2's and 3's (and the future 1's) that you receive, especially when they are few in number. Some of the best shots on this site received a handful of 1,2,3's so just realize that it always happens, and those scorers seldom leave a comment. We all wish that situation was different (and sometimes we're the victims and maybe sometimes we're the perps).

Your shot placed well, considering the caliber of competition this site provides, and that this was everyone's best non-prior-submission.

if people don't think it fits the particular challenge then they might score it low (I know I would). On it's own this is a really great photo :-)

Um...how could a photo in that challenge not fit the challenge? It was completely open.

Anyways...I left a comment.
