Hi I normally retouch portraits I do, i.e for Smoothening Skin, I use lasso tool to copy face on new layer , delete eyes and other things than apply gaussian filter, my question is that , should I use USM after gaussian Blur or it would be wrong as I using Gaussian blur for smoothening skin i.e softening using USM would create sharper image.

i mean does using USM on an image where we used gaussian blur for softening make sense?

Try it a bunch of times and see if you like it.

I use the combination of the guassian blur and the history brush. Works great every time!

I've wondered about the same thing, and I do not know what the "proper" way of doing this, but, for myself, I do use USM after using softening for a person picture. It usually works for me.

I wonder what others do.
