Anyone using or have any good recommendations for a dye sub printer. I was looking at the following:

Olympus P-440 Printer

Kodak 1400 Printer

I spoke to someone at my local camera store and I saw prints for the Olympus. I asked him about the Kodak and he said that they don't carry them, because it's a bad product. He said that alot of customers brought the printers in for repairs.

I've read some reviews online and people seem to be happy with both the Kodak and Olympus.

To me the Olympus paper seems a little thin, but the prints were very nice. All the prints I've seen on Kodak paper are excellent.

So, I'm just looking for feedback, information and any recommendations.

I have the Olympus P-400 - I'm not sure what the difference is between that and the 440, but I am very happy with it. It isn't fast but the quality is excellent. When I bought it, several years ago, I didn't think that any of the inkjet types could compare but now I'm not so sure - I've seen some very good inkjet prints.

You will, however, need to get a good layout program to get as much out of a page as possible. The P-400 uses A4 sized paper - with that and the unprintable margins you can't quite get 8 inches of printing all the way across - so you can only get 2 4x6 sized photos in one page which is most annoying.

Thanks for the information Joe. Much appreciated!

How do you like the paper that Olympus has for that printer?

I like the paper fine - except for the size as I already mentioned. The dye-sub dye-sheets can have either a glossy or a mat finish which is nice. The come out of the printer feeling like real photographs.

Crabappl3 has a dye sub, I don't remember which model - but you might check with him to see how he likes his.

Good luck!

Anybody know when the Kodak 1400 printer is going to be available?

Inkjet technology has advanced so much in the last couple of years that more and more pros are opting for that technology.

On a personal note, me and my wife had one of our wedding pictures printed on a Kodak dyesub in 1998. It faded so bad that last year I took it out of the frame and replaced it with a one I printed from my $60 HP.

Yup, you when considering a dye sub you really need to dive into the fading issue. I read enough about fading problems and blacks not being black, colors being dull because of the three color layers vs the new multi-color pigment based inks for inkjets that I ordered an Epson Picturemate thursday (soon to be followed by a new A4 printer to replace my Epson 790). It (Picturemate) only prints to 6x4, but the results look good and the lifetime of the prints is estimated between 80 to 200 years....

I'm seriously considering the Canon i9900.
