I'm planning on buying a couple Alienbees with the intention of using them for portraits or whatever else I can think of. What kind of flash modifiers should I have? I was thinking the 30x60 softbox and a couple 48" silver/white umbrellas in case I'm not doing a portrait (so I'm not forced to always use the softbox).

Or, if you have any suggestions of what Alienbee equipment I could get for a studio. What would the ideal studio for under $1200 be?

I just spent most of the day in my freezing cold studio using my AlienBees stuff. The most helpful gadget that I have is probably the wired remote control. I have 4 B400 strobes, most of them on boom arms, and it was a real PITA to adjust the lights before I got that little gem. It's a real work saver.

I really like the Octabox (octagonal) softboxes too. I have 2 of the medium size ones, and they work great. I use them on the 13' heavy duty light stands with boom arms. The booms allow you place them just about any where you want.

Honeycomb grids also come in very handy. They're great for hair-lights and anything else where you want more directed light without spill.

Would I want a rectangular or octagonal softbox? The biggest ones cover about the same area. Any one have any other suggestions?

The octagonal softboxes make nice round catchlights, which look better in portraits.
