And I'm about the follow him!

A friend of mine and I were going to do a road trip down the east coast to Florida, but that's since been nixed. Instead, we're flying to Georgia, and staying there for 5 days, then driving down to Florida for 2 days, and then back to Georgia to fly back out. Phew....tired just thinking about it!!! But we're going to be in Helen, and we have no idea what's going to be around to do. I'm just looking forward to the photography. I'm looking to get a good wide angle zoom lense with my B&H gift card, but I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to go and what to do....

The Devil went down, to Georgia.......

Sorry is that Helen, FL or GA?

Canon 17-40 f/4 L

If you're on a budget, nshapiro likes his Sigma 18-125mm.

EDIT- It would help if I actually read the whole question. ;-P

LOL - thanks Shannon. I actually do appreciate the advice. Was looking at the new Canon lense that came out, the 10-22, I believe, but it's too rich for my blood.

I live up in Atlanta...

You should try to swing down to Savannah, it's a very historic city. Wouldn't be hard to find photo opportunities.

We were actually hoping to stay in Savannah, but it was all booked for that week...grrrr.....

Any idea the driving distance from Helen to Savannah? I know Helen is an hour north of Atlanta.

Nevermind...5 hours to Savannah. Ouch. I'll have to run it by my cohort.

Savannah may be booked but there is a barrier island (can't remember the name) just a few miles out from Savannah that is usaully empty this time of year. Beautiful lighthouse, great resturants, long beaches and all less then 15 minutes from the city.

You didn't say when you are going, but if you go in March you can catch a Spring Training game in Florida. I see you are a baseball fan. Too bad the Yankees play over here on the west coast of Florida.

But if you do catch a game, you can get some great pictures, because the stadiums are so small. You can get very close. And they play mostly during the day, so there is plenty of sunlight.

I'll try to get some pictures of the Reds (and whoever they are playing) this Spring. Although I only have a point & shoot camera with hardly any zoom.

Have fun,

Mark

Thanks Mark, but I'm going in two weeks. Won't be there during Spring Training. I was there in 2001 for a week of it, and got great pics. You can find them on my website if you click the link below.

Too bad you are not coming in October. Real busy then for Octoberfest. Lots of drinking and stuff. I am north of Atlanta. In Helen you will find lots of mountains and creeks. Great landscape shots. Also almost all the stores their are desined like the old cottage styles. Last time I was there was about ten years ago. Please share the pics when you get back. I would love to see them.

Rex;

thanks for the info - greatly appreciated. I'd love to get those mountain and creek shots. I'm getting my new super wide zoom lense on saturday, can't wait.

In fact I'm getting the Sigma 18-125mm that Shannon (Scalvert) suggested based on nshapiro, so thanks Shannon!!!

You could probably very easily stop by Savannah on your way to Florida if you had the time. It would be worth it for sure. The island that was brought up earlier might be Hilton Head or Cumberland Island (a nature preserve) you could probably get some beautiful pictures there. I haven't been yet, but I have family that visits the island often.

Hope you have a good time while you're here... soak up some of that southern hospitality! :-)

Edited to add Tybee Island as well, if you're still looking for a place near Savannah. :-)

Tybee Island. That's it. We had a great time. You can't visit all the art and photo galleries in Savanah in a day. Set aside 3 just for that. Savanah is one of my favorite cities in the world and certainly the most artistic in the south. (Draw with New Orleans)

If it interests you, consider visiting the Okefenokee Swamp in the southeast corner of the state. I visited there several times in the 1970s and have some great memories from those visits. You should see lots of birds and wildlife, and the people will probably be of a very interesting variety. In my experience, alligators are easier to see at this time of year as they sun themselves because there is so much less vegetation. (Don\'t know if you would consider that a GOOD thing, though)! There are three main entrances into the swamp, and the western entrance at Fargo, GA used to be the best by far. Be sure to rent a boat or canoe and venture into the wilderness. It really is like stepping back into prehistory. It\'s about a 2 hour drive from Savannah, and right on the way to the east coast of Florida. I\'ve provided an Okefenokee Swamp link below.

I would also suggest that you make it a point to stop into little roadside stores and \"restaurants\", too, especially a good hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint. But whatever, whatever you do, DON\'T try boiled peanuts (which are sold on the roadsides, although I\'m not sure if at this time of year). They\'re disgusting.

The people really are very friendly and laid back, especially if you get off the beaten path and find some of the natives. Ya\'ll have a great time and bring back some great pics. Sure am jealous... I do love and miss the South. Good luck, have fun!

Awwwww come on, what's wrong with boiled peanuts??? I have to say they are definetly an acquired taste. I've lived here about 5 years now and at first I couldn't stand them, but now they're pretty tasty. You've got to at least TRY them. :-D

I gotta admire you coming all the way from California to Georgia and learning to eat boiled peanuts... and like 'em to boot! Even though I was born in Chattanooga and raised in Georgia, that's one taste I never acquired. But you're right, she should at least try them if she finds some for sale.

I guess I'm a stick-in-the-mud. When I lived in Louisiana, I did learn to like crawfish, but never got around to "suckin' the heads" as the local folks down there do. Some customs stay local for a reason :)

You people boil peanuts? What on earth for? That's almost as weird as putting mayonnaise and cheese on your french fries. :)
