I am curious to find out the opinions of the Nikon owners (or anyone for that matter) regarding the Nikon Capture software. Have you found it necessary/helpful/useful for your workflow or have you been able to do without it?

I have not yet decided if I am willing to invest $100 for the software or to put that money toward somethig else.

Personally, I've never used it, as I prefer to import and work with RAW directly in Photoshop CS.

Personally I would invest in Capture One 3.6. I don't have any experience with Nikon Capture but I find Capture One 3.6 is a great partner for PS CS.

It works fine for me, but it came with my camera. It organizes very logically, which is nice.

Capture One? I think about $700? I've heard that Nikon Capture is good, but you night want to try Bibble labs RAW software first. Both the Bibble and the Nikon have a free 30 day trial, so you can compare them risk free.
The Bibble is $30 cheaper than the Nikon for the "Lite" version (enough for any amateur photog).

I am a happy Nikon Capture 4 user (in combination with PS 6).
I shoot NEF exclusively so I always need to process the RAW files.
After testing several RAW converters, I chose Nikon Capture. It is very easy to use and produces the best results. It also comes with a program to control your camera from the pc.
The downside of Nikon Capture at this moment is that it is slow and needs a lot system resources. I run it on a Athlon 2400 with 1 Gig of RAM but it is still a bit slow. This slowness issue is supposed to be adressed with the february 2005 upgrade to version 4.2
Nikon Capture 4.2 will also have some new tools like horizon straightening, but I suggest to look at the Nikon D2x press releases to see all info about that. Nikon Europe has said in the press release that the upgrade for current Capture 4 users to version 4.2 will be free.
You (unregistered users) can test it thirty days for free. You should choose the program that works best for you. For me quality and ease of use were more important than speed. I look forward to working with the improved Capture 4.2 The upgrade should be taken into equation when choosing your converter.
