looking around for a new teleconverter , witch one is better

the 1.4 is better for aperture (larger) and the 2x is better for long focal length...

I guess you would need good lenses with a large aperture to the 2x to work nicely so you don't have to work with a small aperture all the time. (If you havent heard, the 1.4 takes away one stop and the 2x takes two stops) So if you have a f/2.8 lens, the 1.4 would make it a f/4 witch isn't all that bad, but the 2x will make it a f/5.6 and that just might be too small. And you have to think about autofocus as well, most cameras need at least 5.6 in aperture for the autofocust to work. So If you have f/4 lenses and buy the 2x converter, You won't be able to use the autofocus...

...oh, and by the way, I have no experience with teleconverters, but I've heard they are both good and although the lenses are better without them, they are said to be really good.

In addition, 2x works much better with primes, zooms lost much more image quality with 2x than primes.

The lenses you intend to use with converter should determine which one to get. I think like ramevi.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but I was curious if these teleconverters fit all Canon EF lenses or just the L series.

If you have both lenses I see no advantage to using a converter on the 24-70. With the 2X extender attached to the 70-200, only the center focusing point will be usable for AF, but AF will still work. You will have the same limitation using the 1.4X with that lens unless the lens is the IS model.

Both the 1.4X and the 2X will to some extent degrade image quality, the 2X more than the 1.4X.

These are Canon lenses you have aren't they? Second party lenses have their own set of rules and may not work with the X II Canon extenders.

I would not use the 2x with the 1-400mm L, too much image quality loss, I would use either with the 70-200mm but what everyone else said : )

The Canon teleconverters do not work with the 24-70, only L zooms 70-200 or longer.

You're a candidate for the 1.4x. I use it on the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 (non-IS), sometimes hand-held. The image quality is damn good.
