Ok gotta ask this:
Lately I have been getting tons of PMs thanking me for comments I left for images not in a challenge.
Oh no! I am not complaining, god forbid! I enjoy them so much! keep'em comming!
It made me think though...
What is the standart for you? what's the common custom?
Should I PM everyone who is commenting on my pictures? Including challenges? Not including them? Maybe only certain comments "deserve" a PM?
The thing is, I sometimes fear that PMing would harass the commenter. After all it is another email and all that.
What do you think? What would you expect?
And... please allow me to collectively thank all the commenters on any of my pictures. If I didn't PM you, it is not due to dis-respect. I do appreciate all and any comment very much!!
If you think one should thank personally each and every commenter, I promise to do so from now on! But I need to know that you don't feel it would be too much...

I will usually send a PM when either the commenter leaves a detailed critique, or poses a question. I feel that if someone has taken the time to write a paragraph or two, (as has happened on a couple of images), than I can take the time to phrase a polite reply. If they consider it spam, well, every computer I've ever owned had a delete key.

I just don't always have the time to answer personally, I think most voters will take a tick in the helpful box as recognition,
I agree with Dave's comments,if a detailed critique has been given then thank em.

If the comment moves me to want to respond, I do -- but not otherwise.
I tend to not respond to challenge comments. It's not a slight to the commenter at all, and I enjoy every comment I get (yes, even the 'bad' ones), the comments given during a challenge are just a cross-section of public opinion. I fear I am not explaining this well, so perhaps a parallel will help me feel I've conveyed what I am thinking well enough.
Picture a person walking down a busy street. The people this individual walks past will notice her in varying degrees and some will feel inclined to say something about them (or even to them); a comment that can be anywhere in the range of good to bad. If this person knew what those comments were they would have a fairly good sampling of public opinion of those around them, but little else. Just as in this example, ever so often a comment is made that impinges on me that I want to say something in return (good or bad, either one). That's challenge comments -- so I don't usually respond to them; although there have been a few.
A comment left on an image placed in the forums for public critique will get a public thank you in the thread.
But, those that have taken the time to visit my profile page and leave comments unasked -- those I hope I have not failed to thank.

I think there is definately no need to thank every commenter by pm - the site, and by proxy, the commenter will benefit considerably more if you take the time you would spend writing that PM and put it towards making comments of your own.
Having said that I'd say its still unquestionably a good idea to send pm's to those who make particularly helpful, in-depth or obviously well-considered comments.

| I have always considered checking the Helpful box as a way of saying thank you because most commenter's don't want to be PMed, unless they are asking a question. Show your appreciation by taking the time to comment on someone else's photo. |

Personally don't care if someone PM's me about a comment I left. It shows me that they actually read it and may have a uestion or answer a question I asked even during a challenge. But if the coment is to just say thanks then I suggest you take the time and pay it forward by commenting on someone elses photo.

I would love PMing and showing my gratitude if only I knew if the person that left the comment did not mind. I say this because of past treads where people said, "They would give a 1 to anyone that PMed them about a comment". I think it would be nice if we had a list of users that did not mind being PM for there comment. We could start in this forum if people would like. I will start.
All user are welcome to PM me about any comment I leave on there photograph during or after the challenge
Or on the first line of your bio [which is directly below your PM link] let it be know you accept or don't accept PM's about comments during challenges. I think I am going to add that to my profile now.

I generally don't leave a thank you for comments during a challenge, unless there is something unique about the comment that I feel warrants a personal response.
If I ask for critiquing or comments in a forum, I will say thank you in that thread to all those who respond.
If someone takes a look at my portfolio and comments on photos in there, I will send a thank you and I will usually try to return the favor by commenting on at least one of their photos. I have found some wonderful photos and portfolios that way! |

So true, so true!
Great, so I guess this makes things a bit clearer as for your expectations. So I guess I'm not that bad and antipathetic. That's a relief!
:-)
Thanks!!

I think this is a fantastic way to thank people for their comments and to encourage them to comment on more of your work. I actually have a list of people who have provided good and/or consistent advice. I will check occastionaly to see if they have posted new work and try to return the favor. I will also send a PM if a comment has touched me in a more personal way, but that is something special rather than a regular practice.

So don't tell them what comment you are thanking them for. Unless they have only made one comment recently, they can wait until the end of the challenge to know what you are thanking them for.
Of course, with the choice of anonymous commenting, any commenter that does not have a bag over their head is essentially stating they don't mind being PMed. If they send you a reply saying they are changing their score; report them -- That would be a troll vote as far as I am concerned, since it is based on something other than the impact of the image.

If there gonna give me a 1 for sending them a PM then so be it. I shoot for me and me alone and if they don't like the fact that I PM'd them then too bad.

The best answer to this dilema is for people to not reply to comments left on challenge entries until after voting. After voting is closed, and for non-challenge photos, there is no reason not to do as you please. Check the helpful box, PM a simple thanks, answer a question, or ask one, or no action at all-- all are proper responses depending on the comment and how you feel about it.
The only thing that is improper in any fashion is replying to comments while voting is still ongoing. Much as people will put forward excuses to try to justify it, there really is no legigimate reason not to wait until voting is done.

I think I've only PMed one other person besides you to thank them for a comment. I just figured that since I am not participating in challenges and I don't comment much, it's somewhat rare for people to come across my stuff so I thought I should let them know that I appreciate it when they do.
(And I will answer your other PM very soon! :) ) |

I think that DPC's recent preferences features address this problem well wnough that folks should feel comfortable doing as they feel appropriate.
Personally, I don't mind being thanked when I do a detailed critique, but it means more to me when someone responds in a way that tells me my critique made them think than just getting "thanks for the critique." I (really) don't mean to sound ungrateful, but that's what the check box is for... Save the PMs for when you really want to send a message to the critiquer.
Just a thought :)

Really??? I am honored!! To be one of two... wow! As far as I can remember, this only happened to me once before, when I was one of two girls with the same name at class (in my generation, "Adi" was more common as a boy's name rather then a girl's) ~LOL~
Thank you for your PM! Am waiting for that other one very patiently ;-)

| Jinjit, do what you want to do. Feel like pm'ing everyone in a challenge? What the hell, go for it. But don't feel like you're supposed to be doing anything. :-) |
