As i understood the basic editting rules, it is Not okay to desaturate all but one colour in an image - right? |

There are legal ways to do it (sometimes). Please see the Tutorial on the subject under the Learn menu. |

Yes you can but it can't be done using a selection.
See the tutorial.

As long as you don't make any selections, you can desaturate all but one colour, as shown in this tutorial I wrote.

I see my new policy of explaining the reference but letting people find the link themselves got my post in first again : ) |

interesting... i always considered it a spot editting technique of kinds since it is only editting part of the photo.

You should never be "voting low" because of suspect technique. If you think it's illegal, submit a request for DQ and vote as if it is legal (as described in the rules), or else you will end up unfairly voting down perfectly legal photos. If it is illegal what you vote won't matter ... |

UMM... i didn't! I asked here to verify instead, before casting any vote. If you had said, no that is against the rules, i would have requested it reviewed and not voted at all. Sheesh. |

I didn't mean to imply that you had voted like that, but you did mention that you might have done so if you hadn't asked first.
I was trying to point out that how you vote should have nothing to do with whether you ask (or get an answer to) the question -- they are independent activities.
Also, we know "many people" (not you) do vote some photos lower because of concern over methods, so I take every available opportunity to remind anyone who might read this what the proper voting/DQ procedure actually is. Thanks for providing this opportunity for this Public Service Announcement : ) |

no what i meant was is it not better for a person to bring something up and have it explained in public than make assumptions and vote low becuase of them.
I am sure i wasnt the only one wondering (i think we all know which photo is being discussed) as i know im not the olnly newbie here and i am sure you will get a number of requests on it, but my openly asking in the public forum probrably just saved this person a number of low votes from wary voters.
"better safe than sorry" is all i meant by it. |

Absolutely -- bringing it up helps inform other users as well. I think we agree here ... my "reminder" is for those not contientious enough to bother asking first, and this thread provided a current forum for that. |
