I found out about hacked firmware, for my rebel, in a past post. I am currently downloading it now, and was just wondering if there is anything to know about it that was not mentioned before. I am using a mac and was curious if I would be able to work with it on my computer.

Any other mac users that have used it?

Will I have to keep it saved on my CF card for good?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Mike,

I've done the firmware hack on mine, and it works fine. You shouldn't have to leave it on a CF card at all, once you've gone through the firmware update procedure. I'm on WinXP, but I don't see how that would be an issue.

I was a bit disappointed with the hack in one respect...flash compensation seems to be enabled, but there is no way to control it.

Just remember that hacked software voids your warranty, but if it's been tested I guess you have nothing to worry about.

How do you control it? I see how to enable it, but can't find how to use it.

So am I going to need any specific program to work with the file once it is on my computer? Well I have dial up so it is going to take another 10 minutes or so to finish downloading. So I'll cross my fingers and hope that it works with no problems (like that ever happens).

FEC is assigned to the Jump Button, and controlled by the dial on the top/right of cam.

you guys are brave. I don't think I'm going to install that, just yet anyway. Maybe if I get really good and my rebel becomes my backup or something.

(gasp in horror) Uh oh, error 17999? An unspecified stuffit engine internal error?

Anyone else have this problem?

What happens when you turn the camera off? I've had the hack on my Rebel for a long time, and have never seen this before. I've also never heard of anybody having ANY problems with it either.

That sounds like your program (stuffit) doesn't like the *.rar compressed file that the firmware comes in. Perhaps it is a Mac issue.

Please clarify that you are *not* receiving this error from your camera.

Oh yeah sorry to freak some of you out, no it's not my camera, it's my program stuffit. It says it can decompress .rar files, but I guess it doesn't want to. Ha, well I am not sure what the problem is, so if there are any other mac users that have used this firmware, please fill me in on what you did to get it on your computer. Thanks.

LOL, I don't know what would be worse. A nuclear melt down, or my computer melting down. They both sound horrifying.

Thanks to all for the advice. I have to go play in a pool league tonight, so I won't be able to check anymore threads till tomorrow. I will just have to put this off until tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Mike

Back at it again today, no luck though. I would appreciate any mac user who used this firmware, to explain to me the steps they took. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Mike has done it (lykofos). I will be doing it, but i want to know my camera better first, before i make it more complicated!

If we are all at the Aviary on Sat perhaps we can bother him to show us the new tricks the firmware allows!
