What is all the hype about the "L" lenses from Canon? Are these the professional series lenses? What are the benefits over the 70-200 F2.8 and the 70-200mm F4? I read some other threads but I didn't want to intrude on their discussions.
I have a Tamron 28-300mm lens but it's not the sharpest lens I've used. Should I scrap this lens and go for the "L" series Canon 70-200mm? |

Canon's "L" line is its professional series lenses. Special low dispersion and ultra-low dispersion glass elements used as well as fluorite in the higher end ones. The "L" series are the best lenses Canon knows how to make.
The difference between the 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4 models is one stop of light, weight, Image stabilisation and $$$$$

L's are Canon's best.
They use special lens elements, including fluorite to get rid of distortions and optical abberations and flaws as much as possible. The standards are high and therefore most of these lens are as sharp wideopen as other lenses stopped down. Besides that, the lens itself is build to last. You could use one to slam the pins of your tent into the ground so to speak.
edit: 90 seconds....

Ahem...I wouldn't do that to a $1700 lens ;)

If I went for the F4 model and added a 2x teleconverter on it, what would the aperture be? Then, what would the drawback be about having a "L" series lens with that aperture compared to the F2.8 with a teleconverter? Will the F2.8 work just find during the day with that aperture? |

I'm so glad someone asked this question because I've wondered the same thing! :) |

It would be f/8, a two-stop difference, and you'd have to resort to manual focus as the 10D/300D/20D won't autofocus with a max. aperture of f/8. I wouldn't try to use the 2x teleconverter with a zoom lens. The image degradation is quite noticeable. They work well with the longer primes but the zooms don't have as much quality to give away. The 1.4x, on the other hand, works very well with all lenses. I use one on my 70-200/4L from time to time and don't notice any difference at all in image quality under normal conditions.

2X TC's work best on long L primes, 1.4X TC's work ok on L zooms.

Hereis one of the best reasons to go with an L series lens. //www.photo.net/equipment/canon/is_lenses/ Go to that link an dread the complete article ans view the examples. Ask yourself, "If I am the photo buyer and these two images are equal which one would I pay for" I think you wll agree that the L Lens wins hand down.
