Let me ask the question that should not be asked. What if the shot is just pathetic and is obviously created to acheive the "underacheiver" award. A shot that equals in quality to the wrapper on a roll of bathroom tissue. We all know these shots.....

i have no idea of what you're talking about ivo!

Hey Lesley! That got you second to last too! We should try harder! (Or less...) How do you get a brown ribbon dammit!

interestingly though, i actually liked this picture, thought it was hilarious and had some quirky emotion going in the kitty's face. but in answer to your question, you could always just insult the voter. i think jacko's original title was something like 'angry kitty ready for a scratch your eyes, intentional abstract, if you give me a one you are stupid.' :)

(fie on you les, for getting me involved in this thread!)

I was just looking at recent brown ribbons...Here's the brown ribbon for the movie title challenge. I know it's ugly... But read the comments... A bunch of people said "we don't see the throat"... Who cares if we don't see the throat! Point out the bad focus, the light, composition... But Jeez... Do we have to be so obvious?

By the way... I tought it was allright considering the title and the context... I gave it a 6! :p

But it sucks when I see better pictures ending up lower that the average one who represents the challenge lit-te-ral-ly... That's just boring... Is it just me?

Yes Simon, you did create a nice picture,,, but it sure was WAY out there when viewed in the context of the challenge.

I have no problem with you or others expressing your artistic side. However, having said this, surely you must recognize the fact that the parameters were not met, and as such you can't be surprised that the voting majority let you know that (in their opinion) you had failed to meet expectations.

Perhaps a photo of this nature would have done quite well in the "Best Of" category. There is nothing wrong with being "avant garde", but viewed in this context you must admit that there do exist some restrictions.

I was not surprised nor upset. Like I said, I knew it was going to score low... Because I know that people give way too much importance on the challenges. That's why in every challenge you'll always have a bunch of pictures that look alike.
Worst... During challenge, people discuss about them on the forums...
How many times have read a thread where someone asks do you think I can do that? Would that meet the challenge... Faceless... Do all of the people on the picture have to be faceless... They are asking others what to shoot...
Christ, be creative and dare to be different! I beg you...

-Simon

P.S. The challenges always has a guideline resumed in a phrase... The rest is up to you guys to create something you feel meets the challenge. But no, some people need a hundred pages of current challenge threads to guide them...

I'm not gonna say what I scored that image, but I will say at least 113 people scored it worse.

A 6 though on a scale of 1-10 would suggest a better then average photo.
The final score that image recieved was hard earned and well deserved.

And I'm part of the 12 persons who saw something in this picture that would rate it above average...

But my point was to show some of you, that some of you have to see the throat... Ridiculous...

Instead, why don't we choose a picture for challenges and try to recreate it just as the original?

I'm sure some would still ask if what they are doing is allright in the forums...

I got your point and I understand your point but I voted that photo based on its merits a photograph not on whether you could see the throat.

That's fine with me. Read the comment I left on this picture duriing voting... It's almost Ed Woodesque, it takes a special talent to create something so repulsive and ugly...

I'm going to have to disagree with the statement that thinking outside the box will get you a low score. I used to think that, and I submitted an "outside the box" photo prepared for a rough week in scoring, but that's not what I'm seeing. I'm getting a few "doesn't meet the challenge" comments, but the score certainly isn't reflecting that as the majority opinion.

I'd venture to rewrite my opinion, that: thinking outside the box without executing well will score low.

Yup that's human nature. If it's scoring badly then it's either 'too artistic' or 'too much outside the box' Seldom do we see people saying 'yeah scoring badly 'cos it's shite'

I for one may have pushed it a little, judging by the comments I have recieved on my entry. But, being new to photography, and to the site, it was something (I) had not done before. However I think it shows in the voting. So I'll use this as a learning experience, and next time try to put more thought nto it.

Creativity and originality will always get a high score if well-executed... as long as you meet the challenge (the price of admission). As this site matures, the old-timers become jaded because they've seen it all before. Anything new is welcome.

Riding your unicycle naked through the lions' den at lunchtime is creative and innovative........... ill advised maybe,,, but it is something new.

Will people notice you,,, you bet,,, will they try to emulate you,,,, not likely.

Just a thought,,,,,,,,,

Recognizing this, we can, I believe, do more by trying to make the best work popular and by voting and commenting accordingly.

Okay let's say for example that I'm one of the ignorant people. But since I'm ignorant, I obviously don't know it..I can be told by someone else I'm ignorant but it they're ignorant, too, then they wouldn't know it and wouldn't realize they'd be the pot calling the kettle black.
Just looking for clarification, please excuse my ignorance.

Igonorant, shmignorant, everyone is ingnorant to some extent and taste is subjective at best. If I walked into a gallery or a museun in NYC I don't think I would be suprised at all to find a ten foot tall image of this:

Does that mean I would like the image any more? No. I would still not like the image. Does that make me ignorant? Maybe. Does that make the museum curator ignorant? Maybe. But who is to be the judge. All we can go on when judging these thing is our own tastes and that is all it comes down to.

Ok, let's say for example you 'are' one of the ignorami. Telling you won't do a thing.People, as a rule can't be 'taught' unless they're open to learning. And you're right, who should, credibly, set you straight?

What I'm suggesting, instead, is to focus on the work, the best work, if and when we recognize one. When we reward a 10, say, to an image because of an infectiously extraordinary charge beyond that of other images which 'can be expected to be known', our comments should be an attempt to formulate why we feel this way. Pertinent facts and characteristics of the photo should, IMO, be addressed as much as the context of such traits.

Instead of engaging in the futile task of correcting errors, being indignant about prejudice and the expression of 'poor taste', we could, more effectively attempt to show what it is better and, perhaps, articulate why this is so.
