Costco (online) currently has the Canon 20D w/kit lense available for $1499.99..... actually $1616.71 w/tax & shipping (to my Minnesota door).

One of the contributing factors in considering the purchase through Costco (of which I'm already a member) is their "We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund" policy.

According to Costco personnel, if for any reason during ownership I would become dissatisfied with the 20D, simply return it to any Costco store (with receipt) for the full cash refund. - So much for a service contract I guess.

I would welcome any opinions, suggestions, or alternatives.

They do have a very good return policy. A friend of mine returned his digi video cam after almost a month for a full refund.

hrmm...I didn't think they charged tax on the internet??? Or did something change?

Shipping sounds more then a little high.

Anyway here is the same kit from Tri State Cameras which also has a return policy for US $1,369.99 and only $30 shipping and insurance. (No Sales Tax!)

Screw Costco, save a couple hundred duckys.

I believe that if the 'online business' and 'purchaser' reside in the same state, then the collection of sales tax is required.

The shipping actually is $18.05, it's my Minnesota sales tax of $98.67 that bumps up the price a bit. I see that Tri State has a 30-day return policy (from date of invoice).... I guess I need to decide if Costo's very liberal (basically lifetime) return policy is worth a couple of 'Ben Franklins'.

Finally I can say something worth while! I work for Costco and we have an absolutely awesome return policy. You can actually return anything up to five years after you bought it. You should see the swimming pools, BBQs, and all other summer products come back in Septmeber that we return. "Uh, yeah, the flame didn't get hot enough and some non-existent part broke." Don't even start me on Big screen TVs & the Super Bowl... Man it makes me mad sometimes. (Done ranting)
Anyways, Costco has an awesome return policy, definitely worth the extra bucks!

If that really is a lifetime return policy - no strings attached I would think it would be well worth the extra money. You still have the one year Canon warranty in any case, for what it's worth. I would definatly check the fine print to be sure of the conditions for return with that Costco lifetime policy.

Costco's Risk Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee
On merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell by offering a full refund, subject to certain product specific limitations.

I would definatly find out what those limitation are.

Most likely food products so you can't return an empty box or some other consumable item.

You must pay sales tax if you live in a state where the seller has a brick and mortar store. Sort of unfair but at least you can return it locally if anything goes wrong.

You work there, don't you know?

Yeah, but not that department (membership) I have heard of the CRAZIEST things being returned; a five-year old pee-stained mattress, a 99% eaten deli tray containing rolled meats, and many more! Their policy on returning computers is unmatched: computers can be returned up to 90 days after purchase for any reason at all!

Hey kidchico.... I noticed my local Costco store had the Digital Rebel w/lense plus an extra battery and a Canon bag. Do you know how they decide when and if an item (such as the 20D) will be available at their stores (maybe with a similar package).

They usually do't sell higher end products/cameras. They pretty much max their aim for serious amateurs (D70, rebel), there would have to be a pretty huge demand to get something that expensive. Same with TVs; they don't get the 70" plasmas because only like one person out of 50,000 would buy one. They try to have a broad range of products, but not as broad as a camera store.

Speaking of return policies, I know that Sears changed theirs because people were doing stuff like buting a snowblower, using it all winter, returning it in spring, buying a lawnmower, using it all winter, returning it in fall, buying a snowblower and so on....

Wow, that̢۪s an unbelievable return policy!

You could buy the 20D now and then return it when the 30D comes out. And, since the 30D will probably be cheaper, you could even make money on the deal too. :)

I wish I had known that when I bought my 10D. I bought the body only for $1799, and then less than a year later they̢۪re selling the 20D, with a lens, for $1599 (B&H prices).

The 20D with kit lens is $1399 at zipzoomfly.com with free 2nd day air shipping, so why bother with Costco? That's over $200 that you could spend on other goodies.
