I need to choose two of the photos from the following gallery to enter into a photo contest. The contest is from Icefest in my hometown. They will be 8 x 10 prints in an 11 x 14 mat. There is a special category award for black and white, so I would like one of the two entries to be black and white.

If you really want to make an educated selection, here is a link to the past photo winners to give you an idea of what works. (although I REALLY dislike last year's winner!)

Based on what won last year I wouldn't even enter unless they have different judges. If they have the same judges this year pick your lamest picture and enter it. It may have a better chance of winning. I personally don't see how the judges from last year, seeing what they had to pick from and what they chose as winners, could possibly have any background in art or photography.

I like the action shot "Dragon-dentist" and "Lion-close". Most of the shots suffer from distracting backgrounds that I'm sure you had no choise about. But these tow seem to stand out to me. Good luck!

beings how 2nd and 3rd last year appears to have gone to the same person (hmmm first place even has the same surname)...can you enter 2 in color and 1 in b/w category?

Anyways, I think you want to go with the least busy with as few background distractions as possible. The vase (night) seems to be well composed and not too busy. I like the way the bridge (sculpter itself) at day looks as it is quite clear...Lion tamer is very nice as well. I like the Peacock and Seal Bath in regards to b/w.

Peacock and Bridge get my votes

I recently had laser eye surgery and would strongly recommend that someone suggest this procedure to last year's judges, it would prove of great benefit to them.

On a serious note, for the colour entry, the lion-tamer-lion is the one I like the best, whereas the Bridge and the Vase is what I would opt for in the black and white.

Do however take into consideration that I am a newbie and no diddle about photography. Good luck to you.

I think the winner was based on the quality of the sculpture photographed, not the photograph itself.

So in essence a lousy shot of a great sculpture would make one a winner. Lord, I need to go there,,, I am a shoo in. (heheheheehe)

That is what I was thinking. It seems to be all about the sculpture not photography.

But what beautiful sculptures they are...I love that peacock closeup!

The wedding cake is beautifully isolated from the background, and of course the lion and the bridge are great shots as well!

Nicely done!

So why call it a "Photo Contest" then??? Seems "Ice Sculpting Contest" would best describe what it is they are awarding prizes for.

Great responses, thanks. And I'm very gratified to hear that my opinion of first place last year does not appear to be merely sour grapes! My photo last year was actually of that same sculpture. (See the "honorable mentions".) The whole Icefest really IS a competition for the sculptures that in the photos you see they are on a wooden stand or under a tent like booth. Those are usually the best sculptures, but the worst to get decent pics of due to the background, etc. The other sculptures with lights behind them, etc, are all "sponsor" pieces that are mostly for display and crowd interest.

On the plus side, all photographers have to deal with the same issues as I did (weather, backgrounds, crowds, etc.), so at least it's an even playing field.

Judy

I'd recommend staying with the night shots, as they have less-distracting backgrounds, and in several the dark subtle texture adds to the piece.

My suggestions, in order:

horse
vase
wall-shot
peacock-close

On the wall-shot, it might be nice to burn in the far end of the wall, so the eye is not pulled completely out of the image. Peacock may do well in B&W, as I think the few color spots are more distraction.

Just my thoughts.

Good luck.

I'd go with dragon dentist or peacock-close.

I did add a new one to the gallery. The first one (a dragon), I colored in the background, but I'm afraid it's too sloppy a job to be considered for an entry into the contest?

Can't tell about the background. Add a slight gaussian blur to the background to fuzz any errors. Have to examine the print to tell.

I like Dragon Fix, Trina and Peacock.
