Hi all,

my name is Tolli and I'm new here. I´ve just got my first DSLR, have played with photography in the past but mostly in the form of snapshot out-getting-drunk-and-jumping-in-the-thames kind of stuff. In the last two weeks I´ve taken about 800 pictures and had a handful of something I think is decent enough to post here.

So the big question is, what do you think of my pictures / where can I improve etc?

Cheers,
Tolli.

PS. What a great website, well done guys/girls.

Congrats on the 20D! I'm envious...

You seem to have a good eye for subject. Just a few comments:

1st photo: Seems a little soft - like it could be a bit sharper. The colors don't seem as brilliant as they could be.

2nd photo: I really like the angle of the butterfly on this one - but because of that he gets lost in the leaves. I would suggest getting even closer or cropping in more.

3rd photo: Again, I like the capture/angle of this butterfly - I haven't seen their body so far away from the wings before, may just be the vantage point in which you shot this one. Good use of DOF here.

4th photo: I like night landscape/waterscape shots like this. Nice work here.

5th photo: Beautiful model. :-) This works great for a snapshot - but for more of a portrait type look, the background is distracting.

You will do well with your camera. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

James/Tina, Thank you both very much for taking the time to comment.

Tina, I can see you´ve had experience and are well schooled in the butterfly arena :) My shots were taken at the syon butterfly house in kew, london. Liked it so much I got an annual ticket, will come in handy for practicing those macro shots. I wouldn´t be able to comment on the body vs. wings issue but I´ll mention it to the helpful staff at the house next time I´ll be there. I´ll also be looking through your portfolio, the handful I took at look at just now were inspiring.

James, great shot on the lake, keep up the good work and do post more pictures soon!

Thanks again,
Tolli.

Hi Tolli, I'm a newbie as well....just entered my second photo for a challenge. Your photos are really good for a total newbie! Nice to meet you.

I like your photos, Tolli...being new to digital, I would recommend that you sharpen these photos in post-processing (assuming you have your default settings at 0 for in-camera sharpening, contrast and saturation). They seem a little soft.

To make them pop, push the contrast just a bit and perhaps the saturation as well.

I can't wait to see more of your work!

Thanks for the kind comments :) I´m hoping to get to grips with post-processing soon, all I´ve really done so far is use the Unsharpen Mask :) It´s all very new to me. I´ve bought a lot of books though! lol.

Lol, it´s one of the privileges of taking up the art late, you don´t have to waste any money upgrading, can go straight for the best ;) Thanks, Tolli.
