Mike, I'm hopeful this will be on of the things improved when the new Critique Club restructure is implemented (see Manic's thread on this).
Suggestions for that include the idea of more experienced CCers mentoring (and checking the work of) less experienced CCers. I imagine there will also be an avenue for people to tag critiques received as below standard (though this would have to be ruled on by some CC authority in order that people didn't abuse it to get free critiques).
Anyway, if you haven't already read that thread, do have a look at it as I'm sure you'd be able to give another perspective or new ideas.

I had taken a hiatus, but did my first in a while last night. Spent about at 30 minutes on it. I'll try to do one a day again.
HOWEVER: I sure wish there were a way to "pass" on an image. I don't like pressing the give me an image button because there's no telling what you will get. And I don't want to short shrift anyone on a critique, but if I've already commented, or I'm not as experienced in that facet of photography, I'd rather put it back in the queue.

I took one. It's the first I've done in a really, really, really long time. Actually, it's not done yet, but will be by htis afternoon.
I usually get it out of the stack, look at it, think about it for a while, look some more, think some more, then write. The actual writing time is only a few minutes. The thinking is more.
In all honestly, though, the thinking may be a form of diversionary procrastination. :-)

When I critique an image (not CC, just plain ol' me) I usually pick images that show someone tried, but couldn't quite "get it". When I think I can see what they missed, I get quite a bit of satisfaction from sharing that.
As many people have also stated, I have learned quite a bit about expressing what does and does not "work for me" about different images. That knowledge has been very beneficial to developing my style.
I've always thought it was interesting when people express the need for explicit gratitude as a result of them doing critiques. I guess I must be selfish by nature, but I find the critique experience to be plenty rewarding in itself.

Wait a sec.. let me catch some breath... ahhhhhhhh...
What a compliment, and from my first favorite photographer in this site!!! wow!!! we're not worthy... we're not worthy...
Thanks a lot for the compliment. I really appreciate it!
I will go read some cc comments and see how they're built, and then I will consider the option again. Just cuz you said so... ! :-)

I am in full agreement with your entire post there.
The point I left in above ties in nicely with my earlier point ... it is just too easy to request a critique, so people do so without giving it any thought.
Make it so you have to put a little effort into the request was my idea, which I still like, but I now prefer this one....
If I am only allowed to request 1 a month I am not going to waste that on any old photo, I'll save it for a photo where I really want the assistance.
