Have just sold my Coolpix 5700 and am about to purchase a D70. A local dealer is offering a good deal on the following kit: Nikon D70 with Nikon 18-70mm and Nikon 70-300mm G Zoom Lenses.
I expect mainly to be taking outside shots (Landscapes, etc.) with some portrait, probably won't be getting into anything tricky (ie: wide angle/fish eye/macro) until I've learnt more and done some courses
Is this a good choice or should I be looking at a different combo? Would appreciate some experienced views. |

The D70 with Nikon 18-70mm lens is a great combo. The 70-300mm Nikon lens may just be a Tamron lens and all the reports I have heard are not that good on that lens.
You may want to do some extra checking. In Australia now the kit includes the 18-70mm lens and a base filter kit from cokin. Looks like a great deal plus $200 cash back I think.

I decided against the 70-300mm and got a 70-210mm 4-5.6 and 50mm 1.8 from ebay. My decision was based on the fact that the 50mm is an absolute 'must' and the 70-210mm on this review and this review.

Thanks heaps guys, after reading those reviews I may just get the 18-70 for now until I learn WHY I need another lens and then consult the forums again.
You are right about the cashback but I haven't seen that filter kit anywhere. |

When you get a 50mm 1.8 also look at getting one of these, that way you get a tack sharp portrait lens and a very nice macro option at an excellent price.

| I have those lenses, plus 28-80 G kit lens, though I got the 18-70 DX just a few days ago and haven't done anything with it except a few test shots. In my opinion, 70-300 G is an OK lens if you don't have high expectations. It needs a lot of light to produce decent pictures, for one. Yet, it serves me well, as I'm just a glorified snapshooter, and 1000+ Dolar lenses in my hands would look like lipstick on a pig. |

Camera house had it last weekend in Hervey Bay. I was in there asking about filters and they pointed it out to me.
I missed out on all of the deals :(

Took this the other day from quite a distance away and hand held with my new 18-200mm Nikon Zoom. I'm very happy with it. I also have one in the Architecture challenge which is crisp.

the 18-70 kit lense is quite a versatile piece of hardware. it's fantastic, and will give you great results. the 70-300 G is not that great of a lense. you can pick one up real cheap. Sigma makes a 70-300 that I think is superior to the nikon G version. if you spring for the Nikkor 70-300 ED, you'll get better image quality, but you're still stuck with a f/4-f/5.6 aperture, which has it's limitations....
but anyway, going with the d70 and the 18-70 at first should be sufficient. it'll give you lots of room to learn with ! good luck!
