I'm looking to be able to do some (on location) portrait work, I can use the SB600 as a wireless slave (D70 in commander mode) but I have to have the built-in flash enabled.

My idea is to buy a cheap, second-hand flash unit to mount on the D70 which I would use with my lumiquest thingy, but would the SB600 still fire as a slave?

Any ideas?

Hey Darren,

You can use the SB-600 as a slave, but you have to use the camera's own built in flash or an SSB-800 as a commander - you cannnot use any other flash (not even the SB-600) as a commander.

When you use the camera's flash as commander, it only does the controlling pre-flashes, not any "exposure" flash, therefore only the light output from your slaves will affect the picture.

If you're doing portrait work, you'd probably need at least two SB-600's for the job, so that you can controll the shadow areas from the main flash with the second (set to lower output, perhaps) unit.

Personally, I use the SB-800 (x2), as they don't cost that much more, have higher output and can be used as a camera- or cord-connected master whilst also exposing on the picture...

I hope this helps.

Thanks Tim,

I thought that this might have been the case.

Cheers
