Re: Faceless - Photograph human beings engaged in normal human activity. The restriction - they are faceless. Their faces must not be seen.
Question: Are masked/covered faces considered faceless? I am currently living in a very cold climate, and thus it is not uncommon to find people with there faces entirely covered (with the possible exception being the eyes).
I'm not looking for a loop-hole, just a clarification. |

The same thing crossed my mind. For me, the face is made up of all its elements. An image just showing the eyes would be ok with me.
Now, on to another issue. Some people will undoubtedly want to clone out a face in part or as a whole. I also thought about this, but from my interpretation of site rules, cloning out a face or faces would not be allowed since it would constitute removing a major element from the photo. Waddaya think?

Just as a voters point of view; a mask kinda meets the challenge, but would probably not vote it that high (unless it was really done in a unique way). |

Cloning out a face would probably be DQ'd. |

hopefully we'll get some sc opinions regarding cloning out the face. i agree, it should be dq'ed, but if the faces aren't very large in the photo, it may not be considered a major part of the photo (imagine a shot of a large crowd in a marketplace - the faces would each be pretty small in the overall photo)
gonna have to borrow the doctor's mask:

Faceless - Their faces must not be seen.
The question is what constitutes a face and whether masks. snood etc will be OK, just showing the eyes..
Each of us will have a different interpretation of this. The wise amongst us will steer clear of potential controversy on this and avoid showing any face.
On the editing front, It seems to be that if the area of importance is lack of a face, then any editing which is used to remove the face would potentially violate the spirit of the competition, and face DQ...

Faceless is a cool theme but I think "headless" would be even more interesting.
I'm sort of with cloudsme. I'd prefer not to see any sort of face, mask or otherwise, while voting.

Face -The surface of the front of the head from the top of the forehead to the base of the chin and from ear to ear
So to me, all that area should not be seen. |

Got this about 8 hours too early but this says faceless to me (in the the spirit of the challenge). People doing what they normally do but their face can not be shown.

You know the one challenge that I really wanted, that I had a fabulous idea for it. And it's for members. |

I believe we still have a one-month "trial" membership for $5. |

I just joined! It's only $25 for a whole year! I got tired of not being able to VOTE on member challenges... I also get to enter the challenges now too :) |

In my opinion, I would think a mask would be fine, but if the eyes are showing, to me, it doesn't meet the challenge! |

I'd vote down ANY image that showed eyes, especially, or facial features, in general, though I suppose if a shadow covered the whole face but an ear, say, that would be ok. Personally I think a mask would be cheating; the challenge is "people engaged in an ordinary activity" or something like that; for me this means to shoot the mood of people at their normal functions WITHOUT showing their faces.
I'd expect to see "portraits" focusing on hands at work, for example. Shots over the shoulder. Silhouettes will be too easy. I think the people need to be the focus of the image, also, not incidental to it., I expect to see lots of scenics with small silhouettes to "meet the rules" and I won't be cutting them any slack.
I'm a hardass, and getting harder...
Robt.

I am always amazed at ways people try to interpret the challenge. If I see a mask, I will probably give the photo a lower score. As always, the best photos will get a higher score. If you get cute with the rules you will get a lower score. |
