Great photos again this week Alan. I agree with your favorite photo of the week although I would say Jesus and the Cheerleader rank up there pretty high too.
So are you ready for Jacksonville? |

I don't know how confident I can be about our chances of winning next weekend after that game... but I have lined up lodging just in case!
I found another angle of that play that produced my favorite photo in the Post-Gazette this morning. This shot was taken at just about the same instant from a different angle:

Hey, Pittsburgh has the best beer. And lots of it!
It's the only explanation i find acceptable.
Nice pics alan - any idea what lake fong uses for equipment? His pic looks much different than yours (in color/saturation and lens used). Film maybe?

dang alan, your photo is much better than that one.
As far as winning next week, I think the Steelers, young Ben Roethlisberger, and the coaching staff just got a HUGE reality check -- after such a close game and being favored by (what was it exactly?) 9'ish.
They're going to have to hit that practice field and should be expected to train like it's spring training all over again -- balls out. Big Ben needs to realize that he needs to stay calm -- the worst that can happen is they lose and if he continues to make sloppy little mistakes, it will be his fault. The quarterback carries most of the burden for the team, but the team is the most *visibly* affected by the quarterback's performance, second (in what is plain and visible) by the field goal kicker.
Just because a kicker misses a 35 yard field goal and the team loses by two points, doesn't mean the team lost *because* of the kicker. Chances are the game shouldn't come down to a kick in the first place and if that quarterback didn't throw that interception or that reciever didn't drop that pass that was right to him, it wouldn't have -- that it what I'm talking about by *visibility*.
--
So like I said -- drop the sloppy mistakes, the team already got their reality check, and don't give the other team yards by getting penalties (I realize some are unavoidable) -- and they should pull out a win next week no problem. Here we go Steelers, Here we go!!!
EDIT for misquote.

I chatted with Lake on the sidelines a bit, but I didn't take note of which camera he had. The PG uses Nikons, and most of the sports guys use D2Hs now, my brother included. And those guys all have the zillion-dollar huge lenses, so no doubt that's an advantage to them.
I don't think the differences in hue are so much a function of the camera and lens as they are the white balance settings. I notice that a lot of the guys set their white balance for "cloudy" during night games. I tried it, but I felt that the shots just looked too yellowish for my taste.
The main difference (to my eye, anyway) in Lake's shot compared to mine is in the yellows. His yellows are more orangish, and mine are a little more yellow. I don't know what is the preferable one there... I'd go with his since he's got the good job at the PG! :)
I generally just use the Auto white balance at night. The thing that seems off for me in his shot is the color of the field. To me, his field looks a little too yellow-orange-ish, where mine is more of a light green. I dunno... I'm no expert with color balance. I'd be curious to hear other opinions on what WB I should be using here, and which version of these two shots is better balanced.
Just to refresh memories... we're talking about my shot:
And this one from the Post-Gazette:

I like yours better than his Alan -- and I'm not just saying that because you're my favorite photographer of all time ;-)
Have you tried setting a custome white balance? I tried it for the first time today and it worked excellent. Maybe he shot in RAW and set it manually once he got home?
EDIT: I'm not saying he set each photo individually, but say he could open the one, set the optimum white balance, and hit the process button and process them all at once with those same settings as the first???

Your shot of the McCairens deflection is far superior...keep up the great shots.

To be perfectly honest, if that's even possible with the D100, I don't know how to do it :)
I know there's a "PRE" setting in the White Balance options, but I've honestly never bothered to learn what to do with it! |

It's simple with the rebel, and the d70 -- basically, shoot something white infront of you (manual focus on auto WB setting). hit menu, Custom WB select the image, and scroll your scroller over to custom and it's set.
You might want to look into it -- I know I'll be using it next time I'm out after seeing how dentman's (manual wb d70) photos turned out as opposed to my auto (I know I know -- canon vs. nikon hehe).
